Various rumors from the tech industry world are raising eyebrows; Intel’s long-awaited Raptor Lake refresh processors might not offer the huge performance leap that many enthusiasts have longed for for so long. So you should definitely be prepared to temper your own expectations a bit, as speculation suggests that these new processors could turn out to be a bit weaker than originally thought.

Although Intel’s Raptor Lake refresh will act as Team Blue’s next-generation CPU, according to the rumors, you shouldn’t have too much expectations from it or the flagship 14900K. The performance is expected to be sufficient, but just not outstanding either.
The YouTube channel “Moore’s Law is Dead” has published a series of new revelations that make up the core of the news. Earlier reports indicated that the clock speeds of the Raptor Lake refresh would be significantly higher than the current CPUs, possibly around 6.4 GHz or even 6.5 GHz. However, according to current information, the Core i9-14900K is expected to reach a boost speed of 6.2 GHz (possibly 6.3 GHz, but it is highly unlikely to go beyond that). It is still unclear whether Intel will keep the Core i9, i7, i5 and i3 designations. However, it seems likely that the chip maker will keep them at least for a final generation on the desktop, but not for mobile devices. Another possibility is that the Raptor Lake refresh will do away with the designation entirely and use the Core Ultra name instead.
In terms of the 14th generation on the desktop, we should not expect significant IPC gains. However, some raw performance gains can be achieved by slightly higher clock speeds compared to Raptor Lake. According to the source MLID spoke with, Intel is expected to achieve a 4 is 8% increase in single-thread performance over Raptor Lake and an 8 is 15% increase in multi-thread performance. Although this increase in single-thread performance is solid enough, especially at the top end, it looks a bit more uncertain for multi-core performance.
The source concludes that you shouldn’t expect “anything crazy” from Raptor Lake Refresh, but that overall it’s “good enough to be considered a new desktop generation.” This suggests that Raptor Lake Refresh falls just short of qualifying as a new generation, which creates doubt. On the other hand, expectations for Raptor Lake Refresh were not particularly high from the start, as it was always considered a temporary solution.
However, there is some disappointment as it seems that Raptor Lake Refresh will not be as powerful as previously speculated, especially in terms of multi-core performance. It is also speculated that there may not be a limited edition of the 14900KS CPU, which is understandable since Intel is likely struggling with power consumption. In fact, the focus is on bringing Arrow Lake forward as a major advancement, as the rumor mill suspects.
Raptor Lake refresh is just a way to satisfy Intel’s desktop fans for this year, as Meteor Lake wasn’t really feasible for the desktop due to cost (and not releasing it is not an option). That being said, rumors are still circulating about a possible Meteor Lake Core i5 (or equivalent) for the desktop, although there are rumors to the contrary. As always, this information should be considered speculation until we get concrete information from Intel about their next generation of chips.
