With Windows 11, Microsoft has developed an operating system that offers a wide range of functions. However, it is unlikely that an average user will use all these functions at once. Some users even find certain functions superfluous. For these users, a slimmer version of the operating system called Tiny11 is available. Tiny11 not only reduces system requirements so that it can run on older systems, but also eliminates the clutter and clutter associated with the standard Windows 11 operating system.
Although the operating system could be successfully booted, limited resources were a hindrance, so little more could be done than monitor performance in Task Manager. However, loading the OS from memory provided the opportunity for further experimentation, and NTDEV eventually decided to use the GPU’s VRAM for its next project.
Thanks to the GpuRamDrive project, NTDEV was able to store and load the entire Tiny11 operating system in the VRAM of an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 laptop graphics card with 4 GB of VRAM. It’s really impressive that the operating system ran smoothly despite using all available memory, including system RAM. Although the Tiny11 operating system only requires 2 GB of RAM, saving and loading the same content in VRAM puts a strain on the VRAM pool.
If desired, the same tool can be used to deploy a more powerful GPU with a wider bus interface to boost performance. Modern GPUs have more than 10 GB of VRAM, which is sufficient for simple tasks in most cases. However, it can be difficult to play games with less than 20 GB of VRAM because both the operating system and the games use VRAM.
That being said, the 4 GB GPU VRAM is very fast compared to RAM and storage devices as it operates at much higher bandwidths. As the primary storage device for the Tiny11 operating system, it achieved impressive performance with sequential read rates of up to 1960 MB/s and write rates of up to 2497 MB/s. Since the operating system ran on the same memory pool, the performance could have been even better. This illustrates that Tiny11 OS can be a good alternative for users who do not have the necessary PC hardware to run the standard OS, but are familiar with the new Windows 11 interface and some of the features offered.
