Firstly, I’d like to congratulate our freelance colleague, Pascal Mouchel, on his new full-time position at Alphacool International! Especially in such turbulent times as these, for those who don’t want to just relax in the social safety net, there’s something very important to appreciate: a position in a stable company with exciting prospects. When you can combine your hobby with your profession, you should consider yourself truly fortunate.
Pascal began his new job on October 1, 2023, and by now, during his introductory tour, he should have been introduced to all the major editorial teams (since he’s also responsible for sampling). This also applies to the manufacturers among the competitors, because that’s what our large network is for, where almost everyone communicates transparently with everyone else. We all see this as appropriate and important. It’s also my ongoing personal concern that members of our community benefit from these contacts when necessary and useful. When such an opportunity for personal development arises, one should seize it.
Of course, it’s not my place to write about Pascal’s personal background, but the new position came up only in early September 2023 and quite suddenly at that. We write here (myself included) either as pure hobby authors (like Pascal) or as a side job (like me). But there are no full-time editors, but all the more occasional ones. I had written about this some time ago, and we will continue this orientation. It creates diversity and independence.
I’m writing this article today because I’ve been quite upset by some negative reactions and the constant envy on social media. I feel sorry for Pascal in this context, as he has to endure a barrage of verbal garbage. This ranges from cleverly formulated speculations to actionable allegations and factual claims. There are so many examples of editors successfully switching to manufacturers (and vice versa) that I was somewhat surprised when people accused Pascal of dishonesty, dependencies, and even bribery. Deliberately out-of-context and even false information is being shared on Discord, Reddit, and other platforms, casting a negative light on both Pascal and even me.
However, the facts are slightly different: His latest tests, including the Alphacool Core 1 (June) and the measurements of the Apex Stealth fans (August), were well before the first contact (September) through our manufacturer network, which also includes countless competitors of Alphacool. Maybe those spreading such nonsense should ask themselves by what criteria companies recruit new staff? It’s also about knowledge, skills, and reliability. That a company hires someone primarily attests to these qualities. Because if a manufacturer wants to buy tests, they can do it much more simply and discreetly. I occasionally get such offers, and such companies not only get kicked out but also land with a lot of momentum on my personal blacklist.
It’s a real shame that people always assume the worst instead of rejoicing with a colleague who has been able to start a new chapter in his life. As for me, I’m very annoyed by such reactions on social media, but other criteria are more important to me. For transparency’s sake, starting in October, Pascal will no longer test Alphacool products but will continue to pursue his hobby as a freelancer, and I will continue to publish one or another test from him, because a job doesn’t change the person. Pascal will also continue to maintain the fan database as usual, but the tests of Alphacool products will also be handled differently. I’m currently looking for a practical solution, and it will be transparently visible who did or wrote what. I’ll probably have to get more involved in the future.
I had to get all this off my chest today because the reactions of all the previously informed editorial teams and competitors were unanimously very positive. This is unfortunately in stark contrast to the usual forum bubble and all the outgrowths of envy, hatred, and resentment of anonymous protagonists who project the failures and inadequacies of their own lives onto others for their own well-being. This won’t work with me, and Pascal has honestly earned his chance. Therefore, I wish him all the best in his new work environment and a little more restraint from the envious faction. First, get your own life in order and then maybe think in a quiet, internet-free moment about what you would have done.
