The world of mechanical keyboards not only offers a wide variety of switches, but it also has a vibrant community of enthusiasts who are constantly looking for ways to optimize their keyboards. Today we present four mods that not only improve the typing experience, but can also positively influence the acoustic properties of the keyboard.

1. Tapemod/Tempest Mod
Materials: masking tape.
Procedure: Masking tape is stuck to the underside of the circuit board, in 2-3 layers, depending on how much you want to dampen the sound of the keyboard. This helps to absorb certain frequencies and create a deeper sound. Note, however, that this can deprive the keyboard of its characteristic sound signature.

2. Foammod
Materials: Foam (e.g. EVA foam).
Procedure: The foam is strategically placed in the keyboard case, either between the circuit board and the bottom of the case or next to/between the switches with specially adapted foams. This results in a muffled sound when typing and can improve the overall experience.

3. Force Break Mod
Materials: masking tape and scissors.
Procedure: With the Force Break Mod, masking tape is specifically stuck next to the screw holes of keyboards with two metal halves after it has been cut to size. This effectively minimizes unwanted “metallic ping” noises that can occur on keyboards with metal housings.

4. Stabilizer Luben Mod
Materials: Lube (Krytox 205g0, Dielectric Grease or ideally Krytox XHT-BDZ) and a brush with a thin head.
Procedure: Applying lube to the inside of the stabilizer housings and stems reduces friction and gives a smoother typing feel. This is especially helpful to minimize rattling stabilizers that can occur with certain keyboard brands, such as Corsair, Roccat, Razer, Logitech and others. These mods allow keyboard enthusiasts to customize their mechanical keyboards to their individual preferences and enjoy an optimized typing and sound experience.
