The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 16 series is the last vestige of the pre-RTX era, when all GPUs were marketed under the “GTX” series. It’s been more than a year since we’ve seen a new graphics card in this series and that was also a low-end design, namely the GeForce GTX 1630. But from the first quarter of 2024, the GeForce GTX 16 series is expected to enter the EOL phase, which means that these GPUs will no longer be produced.
NVIDIA has announced that it will discontinue its last GeForce GTX family, the GeForce GTX 16 GPU family. This family includes graphics cards such as the GTX 1660 SUPER, GTX 1660 Ti, GTX 1660, GTX 1650 Ti, GTX 1650 SUPER and the GTX 1630. These graphics cards are still very popular in the mainstream and low-end segment as they are affordable and offer decent gaming performance in eSports titles as well as older games. The information comes from the Chinese Board Channel forums.
However, these GPUs do not have many features that have now become a staple of the NVIDIA GeForce ecosystem, such as ray tracing, DLSS, AV1 and more. These GPUs feature the same Turing GPU architecture inherited from the first RTX family, the RTX-20 series, but due to per-dollar performance limitations, NVIDIA had to limit support for these entry-level cards. You can enable ray tracing on these cards, but you won’t get optimal performance because they lack the RT cores.
AICs will continue to sell these graphics cards until they run out of stock, and you’re sure to see some attractive deals on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 16 series at various retailers. However, NVIDIA will introduce a new GeForce GTX 3050 6 GB variant in early 2024 to further cover the sub-$200 segment.
