According to a report from the Chinese Board Channel Forum, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4080 and 4070 Ti GPUs are currently being discontinued and will no longer be produced. This is because the release of the “SUPER” series is imminent and the focus is on this new product line. Forum users who have close relationships with board partners have revealed this information. The two GPUs mentioned are no longer in mass production and are now being phased out.
Both the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti GPUs were launched almost a year ago. Compared to their predecessors, however, they were not considered particularly good value for money. The GeForce RTX 4080 was offered at a price of around 11000 EURO, while the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, originally called 4080 12 GB, was launched at a price of 730 EURO. Originally the card was supposed to cost 830 EURO, but NVIDIA decided against it and eventually lowered the retail price by 100 EURO (RRP). Nevertheless, the card faced stiff competition from the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which offered more memory and faster raster performance.
NVIDIA plans to solve the current market positioning problems with the upcoming GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER models. These models will feature improved specifications, in particular the Ti SUPER model will offer more VRAM and an average performance increase of up to 15%. NVIDIA and its AICs (add-in board partners) will therefore try to reduce the existing inventory of the GeForce RTX 4080 and 4070 Ti to enable some attractive deals during the vacation season. The launch of the “SUPER” models is expected in January 2024.
The report also emphasizes that NVIDIA has already distributed the latest GeForce RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti GPUs and the AICs will now move into the “inventory closeout” phase. In this phase, they are trying to sell as many units as possible to make room for the upcoming launch. The last distribution of these chips by NVIDIA was in the fourth quarter of 2023.
It’s hard to say how many chips have been delivered to AIC so far, but they should still have enough to make more GeForce RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti SKUs for a while. Even though production of the older cards is officially coming to an end, it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of these models. We will continue to see them in retail, but the focus will mainly be on the newer series.
