First image of AMD’s Zen 5 “Granite Ridge” Ryzen desktop CPU with 8 cores & 16 threads surfaced (LEAK)

According to a leak, a first image of AMD’s next generation of Ryzen desktop CPUs has surfaced. The CPU, codenamed “Granite Ridge”, is based on the Zen 5 architecture and is said to offer 8 cores and 16 threads. The image, which was published by @ExperteVallah on Twitter, shows a standard AMD Ryzen CPU without an SKU identifier and a hidden QR code. However, the leaker refers to the chip as an 8-core and 16-thread variant.

The OPN ID 100-000001290-11, which has already appeared in previous leaks, is interesting. Based on this information, it could be the first look at AMD’s next Ryzen desktop CPU family. The suspected AMD Zen 5 CPU appears to use the same IHS as the current Ryzen 7000 & Ryzen 8000G chips. This design is referred to as an “octopus” and has all capacitors outside of the IHS. It is unclear if the chip uses a solder or TIM based interface between the IHS and the die. However, high-end Ryzen CPUs are known to have gold plating below the IHS for better heat transfer. The chip was manufactured in Malaysia in 2024.

The suspected AMD Zen 5 CPU was previously discovered in the EinsteinHome and lhcathome databases. The entries in both databases indicated an 8-core and 16-thread engineering pattern. Recently, several AMD Zen 5 “Granite Ridge” Ryzen CPUs have been spotted in shipping manifests. At least three samples have been seen: two 8-core variants and one 6-core variant.

Little is currently known about AMD’s Zen 5 core architecture. However, according to official information from the company, it should offer the following improvements:

  • Performance and efficiency: increased IPC (instructions per clock) and improved energy efficiency
  • Re-pipelined front-end and wide output: Improved flow of instructions for higher performance
  • Integrated AI and machine learning optimizations: Acceleration of AI and ML tasks

The leaked image suggests that AMD’s “Granite Ridge” Zen 5 Ryzen CPU samples are already out in the wild. The CPUs could hit the market in the coming months after their official unveiling at Computex 2024. In the meantime, motherboard manufacturers are already adding support for the next-generation desktop CPU family to their existing AM5 boards.

(read full article...)
