Some should have heard of Yuzu or even used it. This is an emulator that could emulate Nintendo Switch games on another device. Unfortunately, after a lawsuit from Nintendo, the whole project and a final agreement between Nintendo and the Tropic Haze group has now been scrapped.
With Yuzu you could emulate the Nintendo Switch on your PC thanks to the emulator. This makes it possible, for example, to get and play exclusive titles on your PC. One example would be the popular game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo was not at all happy with this and filed a lawsuit against the project.
And the lawsuit was successful. If you visit the Yuzu website, you get the following message:
Hello yuz-ers and Citra fans:
We write today to inform you that yuzu and yuzu’s support of Citra are being discontinued, effective immediately.
yuzu and its team have always been against piracy. We started the projects in good faith, out of passion for Nintendo and its consoles and games, and were not intending to cause harm. But we see now that because our projects can circumvent Nintendo’s technological protection measures and allow users to play games outside of authorized hardware, they have led to extensive piracy. In particular, we have been deeply disappointed when users have used our software to leak game content prior to its release and ruin the experience for legitimate purchasers and fans.
We have come to the decision that we cannot continue to allow this to occur. Piracy was never our intention, and we believe that piracy of video games and on video game consoles should end. Effective today, we will be pulling our code repositories offline, discontinuing our Patreon accounts and Discord servers, and, soon, shutting down our websites. We hope our actions will be a small step toward ending piracy of all creators’ works.
Thank you for your years of support and for understanding our decision.
Translated, this means that the intention of these projects was not to promote piracy and thus ruin the experience of buyers and fans. Therefore, it was decided to terminate the project and close all ties to it. In addition, both parties reached an agreement that the group must pay damages of around 2.4 million US dollars (equivalent to around 2,211,588.00 euros) to Nintendo. In addition to Yuzu, Citra, which also ran under the group and was an emulator for the Nintendo 3Ds, was also shut down, with the same message on the website. However, an out-of-court settlement was reached.
