Solid food for gamers: Corsair HS50 in headset test

With marketing, that's always such a thing, because that starts with the category. Semi-open or semi-closed? Depending on the head size and the resulting pressure, this is a matter of interpretation, but more. And otherwise?

With currently just 60 Euros street price, the offer is of course interesting, which also makes many things forgive, because you have to stay fair. There are no miracles, but value-for-money crackers. We therefore want to find out in the course of this test whether the HS50 belongs there. Just another headset or a clear recommendation? Let's just look.

When unpacking, we don't get any surprise, as the supplied three-piece consists of a set of headphones, a plug-in microphone and a Y splitter that divides the 3.5mm multifunction jack to microphone and audio jack of the same diameter. There is no more, why?

Optics and haptics

The entire version is dominated by matt black plastic, whereby at least the quilted cushion of the headband and the shiny surfaces of the perforated metal can set a certain optical counterpoint on the back of the earcup. Visually, you can live with it well, no question. But it's not conspicuous, so Kevin-Klaus Normalgamer is probably already crying after the Dragonhypermega-style of various Asia bombers. Rgb? Doesn't really need a human being for hearing and a real light form is defined by his own skill and not by colorful lights.

The ear pads made of thin PU leather imitation together with the rather loose foam pad are relatively large, lie well over the ears and also close quite well. Nevertheless, the system is not completely closed. Unfortunately, the shells cannot be opened without the risk of total loss and the cushions are also stuck from the factory like bolle. Switching impossible.

Climate change is rather one of the most moderate species due to the not too closed variant, but after a few hours the lard melts. Then only rags and patience will help to watch the drying.

The upholstery of the handle is soft enough and hygienically easy to wipe. Which brings us to the fit. For our taste, the handle is designed far too tightly for larger heads.  Of course, the two sides can also be extended by a well-defined pull-out, but this does not change the fact that rather Asian head shapes must have served as a visual object and template for the OEM/ODM.

The joint mechanism is limited to the horizontal plane, but this is completely sufficient due to the large cushions. The seat of the headset is good to comfortable, as long as the head is not too large in diameter. This is best found out by trying it out. So it can fit very well, but it doesn't have to.

The volume control is located along with the Mute button at the rear at the outer edge of the left earcup. This is intuitively easy to reach and operate. The tester also appears stable and functionally safe. The synchronisation of the potentiometer is sufficient, but the left channel started with us first. So better to be fully regulated and re-regulated on the PC. That sounds better, too.

The microphone is plugged in via a jack. The shape of the opening and the plug define the position, whereby the microphone is sufficiently well fixed. However, there is no defined snap-in, here you have to rely on the tactile feedback of the jack itself.

The flexible microphone has the usual ball characteristics and thus has its advantages and disadvantages. But more details about this right from the measurements. First of all, however, we can say that the whole thing actually fits, even if the interpretation is a little idiosyncratic.

However, Corsair is a little stingy with technical data, so that we had to measure ourselves in part. What we have in the end, the inclined reader quickly finds in the following table:
