LG plans to integrate “IPS Black” in upcoming displays to improve contrast ratios. The technology was introduced in 2022 and will now be used in 2024. The panels could have a resolution of up to 6144 x 3456 with a size of 31.5 inches. The debut of 5K and 4K resolution panels is also expected, possibly also in ultra-wide form factors. LG has already launched models with IPS Black and the technology is said to have improved since then. So far, however, this is a long-term improvement plan.

In addition to this, IPS Black offers another exciting application in the area of high refresh rates, especially for gaming applications. This panel type is expected to see huge improvements in the coming generations, from an average of 60Hz to a lightning-fast 360Hz. A 27-inch panel is planned for the fourth quarter of 2024.

There is also good news for gamers, as the WOLED segment is also expanding on the market. The gaming industry could benefit the most, especially due to the quality and the ability to be used in different modes with variable refresh rates and resolutions. This makes it much easier to compete and consume content as users can customize the resolution with the new dual-mode technology. LG Display also plans to introduce this feature in IPS panels, but there is no specific timeline for the launch yet. The following are LG’s planned gaming monitors:

  • 27″ Dual Mode IPS 16:9 (3840×2160 @240Hz 1920×1080 @ 480Hz)
  • 27″ Dual Mode IPS 16:9 (3840×2160 @144Hz 1920×1080 @ 288Hz)
  • 27″ Gaming IPS Black 16:9 (2560×1440 @360Hz)

LG Display has published a roadmap indicating that IPS Black and Dual Mode IPS are expected to be the next big trends in the gaming monitor segment and could be particularly popular with gaming target groups. This development shows that the market is increasingly focused on driving innovation within existing technologies, which is highly commendable.
