The fact that Epic Games and Apple are not good friends is nothing new and has been clear since the legal dispute with the in-game purchases of the game Fortnite on IOS devices. Nevertheless, Epic Games was working on its own app, directly for IOS devices. Now the developers’ account has been blocked.
Epic Games has known for some time that it is working on an IOS app, because after the latest European decision, with the Digital Markets Act (DMA for short), Apple is forced to give up its app store monopoly, as well as other monopoly stores, and must allow other stores on its IOS devices. This means that apps can also be downloaded and used from other sources. This should finally enable fair competition and provide better opportunities for competitors. Thanks to this possibility, Epic Games has found an alternative to bring its popular game Fortnite back to IOS devices. Or so they thought.
At least that’s how the company would have imagined it, but Apple threw a spanner in the works. Epic Games created a Swedish developer account specifically to work on the project, but this was quickly blocked by Apple. Apple categorized the company as untrustworthy and also gave as a reason that a tweet from Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was offensive to Apple and intended to prove that Epic Games would not comply with Apple’s rules. Epic Games wrote in its blog that Apple wants to deter developers who want to compete against them or criticize them. This prevents a fair market from developing, as Apple can eliminate competitors at will.
In terminating Epic’s developer account, Apple is taking out one of the largest potential competitors to the Apple App Store. They are undermining our ability to be a viable competitor and they are showing other developers what happens when you try to compete with Apple or are critical of their unfair practices.
The EU antitrust authority has caught wind of this and is now intervening in this dispute. Whether this will lead to a reversal of the ban remains to be seen. It remains exciting.
