Our colleagues at WCCFTECH have also had their thoughts on AI. After all, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in almost every major technology sector seems to be progressing inexorably worldwide. Recently, the term “AI PC” has also taken on a new meaning in terms of its use by technology giants. Based on previous developments, companies are adapting their product portfolios to incorporate the power of AI, especially in the personal computing space. Before delving into what AI PCs offer, it’s best to take a quick look back at how they have evolved so far.

The year 2023 was dominated by artificial intelligence, and not only did global markets see a sharp increase in AI developments, but a new phase of the cloud computing revolution and the integration of genAI into consumer applications also took place.

There were groundbreaking developments in the hardware sector in particular, such as the integration of a special Neural Processing Unit (NPU) in Intel’s latest CPU series Meteor Lake. AMD also introduced new AI engines under its Ryzen AI portfolio “XDNA”, such as the Ryzen 8040/8000G APUs, Versal AI Edge and the Ryzen Embedded series, which aim to take AI inference to a new level and make it accessible to consumers. NVIDIA is also integrating its AI-enhanced RTX hardware into PCs, laptops and other devices.
What’s next? AI PCs are on the verge of revolutionizing the field of computing, and first glimpses were already shown at CES 2024. Products such as the HP Omen Transcend 14 have a dedicated NPU for media-related tasks such as streaming. Acer’s Swift laptops and MSI’s new AI engine are also designed to improve the video and audio experience, for example through audio filtration and automatic blurring of the background during a video call.

This is just the beginning, as AI is poised to impact every global business sector, be it at the consumer or business level. AI PCs will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the next generation of computing, as their ideology aims to equip personal computers with “intelligence” to assist every consumer according to their desires. Therefore, market researchers such as Canalys and TechInsights have predicted that AI PCs have the potential to take the PC industry to the next level, with market adoption expected to occur at a rapid pace.
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger and Lenovo China Executive VP Liu Jun emphasize that AI PCs are driving consumers to upgrade to newer technologies, leading to accelerated growth. Artificial intelligence, especially integrated into computers, is still at a naive stage, and the full picture of the evolution of the technology industry is not yet fully visible.
