While looking through my very old articles, I came across my second test published on Tom’s Hardware, the pictures for the first one were lost during some server move in 2016. So today I’ll just take number two and reminisce. Back then, we all had to write in the “we” form, which I still completely reject today. The self-denial of the authors is something I did away with back in 2018 and will continue to do so.

In this test, we have deliberately turned away from the general mainstream and have come across a game that is so quirky, punky and also a little crazy in an endearing way that it really shouldn’t be overlooked: Zeno Clash.
This refreshingly different game is the first commercial product from Chilean game developer ACE. Its founders are well-known names in the scene, having previously mainly created mod packs and expansions for various games or even worked as designers on well-known games themselves. To this day, they strive to maintain creative freedom and a certain independence in terms of content with the help of the newly founded independent label ACE.
“…I don’t think we have limitations as a studio to make “epic” games since no studios are really independent devs unless they are really well known or big studios. It’s the publisher that funds large scale games for the devs, so it’s not really an economic limitation of our part…”
(Carlos Bordeu, developer)
The result is an entertaining and, above all, not overly long game, which can be played through in less than 12 hours with a little good will and skill. However, the subdivision tempts you to treat yourself to one of the levels as a virtual treat. The game cannot and does not want to be a long-term challenge that lasts for days, but a nice pastime on the side. You can repeat individual levels, play with friends or guests or put it aside in between and come back to it later without losing the thread (which you will probably never have completely anyway).
The game was created by developers who were used to freely reworking, exaggerating and even adding their own ideas to third-party game content. The fact that discipline and chronology have sometimes fallen by the wayside in their first own game is, in our opinion, quite acceptable. If you look at the game from the points of view already mentioned, then you should take a look at the following pages of the article and also at the freely available demo. Just 20 euros for the full game is a fair price, and you can’t really go wrong with it. We therefore tested the game without prejudice – and were surprised.
