XPG Summoner – Softwareless at premium price

ADATA XPG first tries out a mechanical keyboard with original Cherry switches, does not need to adapt to software and wants to cover all preferences with MX Speed Silver, Red and Blue. Recipe for success or lukewarm broth?

Haptics, Typing & Volume

I test the version of the XPG Summoner with Cherry MX RED RGB switches, which of course significantly influences the feeling when using it. A small overview with key data of the main differences can be found on the product page and also in the scope of delivery:

The proud weight of around 1.14kg (including magnetic palm support), high-quality workmanship and a top made of sandblasted aluminium give a very stable impression, which is only confirmed by minimal bending with medium force. Even with strong keystrokes, the keyboard does not give way. The keycaps can be easily "tilted", but this does not interfere with the typing feeling.

A key press is registered after just over half the way to the "bottom out", the full push ingession of the button after 4.0mm. Due to the linear switching characteristics, there is neither audible nor palpable feedback, the required pressure also always remains the same. With a little acclimatization, you can type very quickly and above all quietly, if you have trained the trigger point into muscle memory. The impact when the keys are fully pressed, on the other hand, can be heard quite clearly.

Starting from my Corsair K70, I felt right at home, writing is good and easy. Of course, you still need some getting used to on every new keyboard, but I had the bow out quickly with the XPG Summoner. The inclusion of macros is explained very well in the manual and works perfectly.

Ergonomics and reliability

Even though I criticized the displays for the angle of the keyboard at the beginning, I can praise them again in terms of subjective ergonomics. Together with the angled top of the keycaps, the palms can rest comfortably on the soft tray, while all keys (f-keys excluded) are comfortably reached.

The XPG Summoner also features full anti-ghosting buttons or a Full N-Key rollover. A Legacy 6 key rollover for older systems can also be enabled with a keyboard shortcut.
