Windows handhelds are now fast enough to be taken seriously, but often not efficient enough to be truly comfortable. This is apparently where Microsoft now intends to step in: according to a recent report by Wccftech, based on information from Moore’s Law Is Dead, Microsoft is internally working on a project called “Project Green Leaf”. The aim is said to be to provide new power profiles for Windows-based gaming handhelds via the Xbox Game Development Kit. The report cites potential savings of up to 30 percent in power consumption, although this figure has not yet been officially confirmed. At first glance, this sounds like one of those typical “one more mode, one more profile, one more label” topics that often end up buried in some menu. What makes it interesting is that Microsoft is already officially working on handheld optimization for Windows, the Xbox app, Game Profiles, and ROG Xbox Ally. The leak therefore does not hang entirely in thin air, but ties into an already visible strategy: on handhelds, Windows is supposed to look less like an awkwardly disguised desktop and more like a platform that finally treats battery life, input, store integration, and performance profiles as one coherent system.
According to Wccftech, “Project Green Leaf” should not be understood as a conventional hardware leak. It is not about a new chip, not about a dedicated Xbox handheld with final specifications, and not about a specific APU roadmap. The core of the alleged project is instead the Xbox GDK. Developers are said to be able to work with two new labels or profiles: “Power Optimized” and “Power Optimized Plus”, abbreviated PO and PO+. According to the report, these profiles are not meant to be simple presets that merely cap TDP or FPS across the board. Rather, developers are expected to target less critical gameplay situations, such as menus, lobbies, background states, navigation layers, or scenes with low visual complexity. In such cases, resolution, frame rate, render load, or other parameters could be reduced without the player noticing the intervention as strongly as during a fast action scene.
GamingBolt additionally reports that a document shown by Moore’s Law Is Dead classifies the profiles as an indicator for “intelligent, software-driven efficiency.” It is also said that supported games could later be marked accordingly on technical detail pages or in the store. That would mean Microsoft is not only working on runtime, but also on visibility and expectation management: users could recognize before purchase or launch whether a title has been adapted for low-power handheld use. None of this is confirmed. Microsoft has not officially announced “Project Green Leaf” so far, and the designations PO and PO+ do not currently appear in publicly available Microsoft documents as a finalized product feature. These official profiles set per-game TDP and FPS limits to improve the balance between performance and battery life. Microsoft explicitly states that the profiles apply only on battery power and are applied on the devices via ASUS software. At the beginning of May 2026, according to Microsoft, this support was expanded to more than two dozen additional games.
That is the crucial point: Microsoft is not only experimenting with handheld efficiency in theory, but has already deployed an official system of profiles, testing, Xbox services, and device integration. “Project Green Leaf” would therefore not be an abrupt change of direction, but rather the next stage: away from externally applied device profiles and toward deeper developer support via the GDK. This would also make technical sense. An operating system or device app can limit TDP and FPS, but it does not always reliably detect which gameplay situation is actually critical at a given moment. The developer, by contrast, knows very precisely whether a competitive fight, a main menu, a loading screen, a lobby, or a less demanding interstitial scene is currently running. That is exactly where the potential for finer savings lies.
The fact that Windows handhelds are repeatedly compared with the Steam Deck in terms of battery life is no coincidence. With SteamOS, Proton, drivers, UI, and hardware profiles, Valve controls significantly more parts of the platform chain. With the Steam Deck OLED, Valve officially points to a larger battery, a more efficient OLED panel, and a more efficient APU; the advertised runtime is several hours depending on the game and load, with Valve specifying a 50 Wh battery for the OLED model. Windows handhelds, on the other hand, have a different problem: they are more flexible, but also harder to tame. The ROG Xbox Ally devices already show this approach officially. Microsoft promotes the Xbox mode as an interface optimized for handheld gaming, mentions Game Bar integration, Xbox Play Anywhere, handheld compatibility, and closer library management. Technically, depending on the model, the devices use an AMD Ryzen Z2 A or Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Windows 11 Home, a 60 Wh or 80 Wh battery, and a 7-inch FHD display with 120 Hz. Especially on the more powerful Ally X, the battery is therefore large, but battery life remains a question of platform efficiency.
This is where “Project Green Leaf” could come in. Not because software suddenly overrides physical limits. But because inefficient load states are especially costly on mobile devices. A game that unnecessarily maintains high frame rates, full GPU load, or aggressive CPU clocks in menus, pauses, inventories, or non-interactive phases wastes battery life. On a desktop PC, that hardly matters. On a handheld, it is exactly the difference between “it is fine” and “why is the battery empty again”.
Another interesting aspect is the alleged difference from Sony’s approach. Wccftech says the leak suggests Microsoft is relying less on rigid hardware-level limits and more on developer flexibility. That fits Windows, but it is both a strength and a weakness. A unified console can be optimized more strictly because the hardware base is more narrowly defined. A Windows handheld ecosystem, by contrast, consists of ASUS, Lenovo, MSI, Ayaneo, GPD, and other devices with different APUs, batteries, cooling solutions, displays, and software layers. A GDK-based approach could therefore make sense. Microsoft would not need to control every device solely through operating system profiles, but could provide developers with tools to scale games sensibly across different performance states. The drawback is obvious: it only works broadly if developers actually use the profiles and if Microsoft makes the integration visible in a clear way in the store, in the Xbox app, and on the devices.
The problem is therefore not only technical, but also organizational. A single Fortnite test showing strong savings would be interesting, but not automatically representative of Cyberpunk 2077, Forza, Call of Duty, indie titles, emulators, or older PC games. The better a game already scales internally, the smaller the additional effect may be. The worse a title currently handles load changes, the greater the theoretical savings potential, but the more work the developer must do.
What is official is that Microsoft is giving handheld gaming under Windows a higher priority. Also official is that the Xbox Full Screen Experience is intended to reduce background activity and free up more resources for games. Not officially confirmed, however, are “Project Green Leaf”, the designations Power Optimized and Power Optimized Plus as a final GDK feature, the alleged savings of up to 30 percent, the concrete May/June 2026 timeline, and the question of whether these profiles would apply only to Xbox Store PC games, to a broader range of Windows handhelds, or in the long term also to other storefronts.
That last point is especially important. Microsoft’s current Default Game Profiles, according to the official developer documentation, apply to games from the Xbox Store on PC and are applied on ROG Xbox Ally devices via ASUS software. Windows handheld users, however, often play via Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net, or their own launchers. An energy-saving system that works only within a partial ecosystem would be useful, but not a complete breakthrough.

“Project Green Leaf” is, as of now, a leak and should be treated as such. However, the idea behind it appears remarkably plausible, because Microsoft is already officially working on several building blocks that point in the same direction. Windows handhelds do not need even more theoretical peak performance, but better control over performance states, load transitions, and battery operation. That is precisely where the weakness of this device class lies.
Personally, the approach seems considerably more sensible than the next raw hardware offensive. A larger battery helps, a more powerful APU looks impressive on the spec sheet, but in the end, when you are on the move, the decisive question is often how wasteful a game behaves in the many small moments between the actual load spikes. If Microsoft succeeds in cleanly integrating such optimizations into the Xbox GDK for developers and making them visible to users, that would be more than just another label in the store.
