WoW: Battle for Azeroth in review: DX11 vs. DX12 and AMD vs. NVIDIA

Multi-core performance

We've just found that World of Warcraft handles multithreading particularly badly – to put it mildly. Let's see what happens when we reduce the number of vCPUs: We took our GeForce GTX 1080 FE and tested several core thread combinations with the Ryzen 5 1600X.

In DirectX 11, the performance is almost identical, whether four or six cores, or even only two cores and SMT are in use. The differences are slightly larger in DirectX 12, but we find that activating the SMT reduces performance with four or six cores!

In summary, a quad-core processor is more than sufficient. But remember to disable SMT. The only exception to this rule is for a dual-core processor: in this case, leave the SMT enabled.
