At Gamescom 2025, Blizzard Entertainment presented “World of Warcraft: Midnight”, the eleventh expansion to the game and the second part of the Worldsoul saga. In addition to the usual elaborately produced cinematic trailer, the focus was on the content and systems that will keep players busy for years to come. In an in-depth interview, Associate Game Director Paul Kubit and Lead Combat Systems Designer Jade Martin explained the core elements of the add-on and why housing in particular is of central importance as a long-term feature.

The housing system is one of the most requested features in the long history of World of Warcraft. Blizzard emphasized that it is not intended as a mere add-on, but as a supporting element that will be expanded over the years. Players will be able to build, decorate and design houses, with two modes available. In basic mode, the layout is similar to Animal Crossing, with objects automatically snapping into the grid. In advanced mode, free placement, rotation, scaling and even floating decorations are possible. Blizzard emphasized that great importance was placed on technical stability, performance and accessibility, as Housing differs greatly in nature from previous zones and game mechanics. Over 1000 different objects will be available at launch, which can be unlocked via quests, dungeons, zone content and other activities.

Housing is not just limited to individual houses, but also intervenes in larger social structures. Players live in neighborhoods with up to fifty people, who can organize activities together via so-called Neighborhood Managers. Monthly challenges, known as Endeavors, provide additional dynamism and reward creative commitment. Houses can be visually customized using various cultural kits, for example with style elements from orcs, night elves, humans or blood elves. The interiors can be deliberately larger than the exterior model, giving players more freedom of design. It is also possible to make houses accessible to friends, guilds or even the public and to flexibly manage visitor rights. Blizzard sees this system as a basic framework that will be expanded over the years with content, objects and social mechanics.

In addition to housing, Blizzard presented further central game content with Midnight. One major innovation is the Prey system, which allows players to hunt down particularly dangerous enemies. They can choose between different difficulty levels, from cooperative variants to extremely challenging solo battles that promise cosmetic rewards and power increases. Blizzard wants to appeal to both casual players and veterans and create an additional progression track alongside dungeons and raids.

There are also significant class-related innovations. The introduction of the Devourer, a new specialization for demon hunters, was particularly highlighted. This Void-oriented playstyle allows a medium range that was previously missing from the class spectrum. Players can choose to play the Devourer as a caster-like variant or as a hybrid melee and ranged fighter that gains tactical depth through dash-in-and-out mechanics. This is Blizzard’s response to long-standing requests for more variety in the Demon Hunter’s class identity.

Midnight also takes players back to familiar but completely reworked zones. Eversong Woods and Silvermoon City have been modernized and graphically brought to a new level. The Ghostlands have been integrated, and the Dead Scar presents itself in an overgrown, redesigned state. Silvermoon is in part exclusively accessible to the Horde, enhanced by new architectural areas such as the Sanctum of Light, which give the impression of a living, evolved cityscape. Blizzard is deliberately returning to iconic locations and combining nostalgic elements with modern technology.

PvP is also being expanded with Midnight. In the new World PvP zone Voidstorm, factions fight for strategic points, with interactive elements such as gravity traps adding dynamism. The new battlefield Slayer’s Rise is based on Alterac Valley and is divided into several phases in which resource management and tactical action are crucial. To make it easier for newcomers, Blizzard is also introducing Training Grounds, a PvP variant against AI opponents that serves as practice while still offering rewards.

On the PvE side, Midnight offers eight new dungeons that are thematically strongly linked to the redesigned areas. These include locations such as Murder Row and Windrunner Spire. Some dungeons are designed in such a way that they can be accessed with mounts and therefore offer a different gaming experience. There are also three raids that are thematically closely linked to the overarching story. The Voidspire with six bosses, The Dreamrift with a special boss fight and March on Quel’Danas with two bosses make up the high-level endgame content. To make access easier, Blizzard is introducing a story mode for raids that allows players to experience the story without requiring the full difficulty.

In addition to the content additions, there are numerous improvements to the user interface and quality of life in the game. The revision of the transmog system is particularly important. In future, transmogrification will no longer be applied to individual items, but to slots, allowing for more consistency when changing equipment. Outfits will also be retained when leveling. With the new situation system, outfits can also be changed automatically depending on the context, for example when entering towns or starting a battle. Blizzard is also working on the official integration of damage meters, revised nameplates with clearer visual indicators and a boss timeline system that will make combat mechanics clearer.

Conclusion

World of Warcraft: Midnight marks one of the most ambitious expansions in the game’s long history. The housing system in particular stands out as a long-term feature designed to strengthen the social core of the game. Combined with new progression systems like Prey, the introduction of the Devourer as a new Demon Hunter specialization, the graphically redesigned zones, additional PvP formats, dungeons and raids, and extensive UI improvements, Blizzard presents an expansion that combines both nostalgia and innovation. Midnight is designed to shape the game for years to come, offering players new forms of self-expression and community.
