We build a Hackintosh – BIOS Settings and the installation of MacOS Catalina 10.15. | Part 2

Creating a MacOS Bootstick

As I mentioned at the beginning, I was quite convinced that creating a boot stick should not be a problem. Bootstick? no problemo! the videos on YouTube suggested this to me, and if Kevin-Horst shows this on YouTube, it can’t be a problem! at this point it should be mentioned that I own a MacBook Air and therefore I am quasi the “King in the ring”. I thought so! The hardware was assembled and the bios already prepared. So let’s quickly take MacBook Air and download Catalina from the App Store.  Check!

Next on the page Tonymacx86 pulled Unibeast, Multibeast and other programs that you supposedly need for the stick and the installation of MacOS. As a backup directly still Clover_r5117 (bootloader on www.github.com) for Catalina 10.15. pulled out of the net. Check again

Stick it in MacBook Air and off you go. Fiddlesticks! Nothing worked… Okay, let’s take a quick look at the situation, keep calm and look out for safety. What did I do wrong? watched the video again, everything fits! then causal research and what did I find out? Catalina was stored as a 24 MB file under Programs. Funny! So I deleted the download and downloaded Catalina again. This time I checked what is actually available in the App Store regarding Catalina stands: 4.9 GB download. Okay, I guess something went wrong the first time. Clicked on Download again and within seconds it was done.

Well, my 450 Mbit downloadspeed is certainly quite decent, but 4.9 GB in a few seconds? something is wrong! check briefly, the file was again only 24 MB in size. Ok, what is the reason for this now? That was the big question! It was only answered many days later, after Hackintosh was already running. The MacBook Air was on an old stand and a not executed update caused me a problem here. Well, Apple cooks only with water and I now cook inside. Check. Don’t.

At this point a small excursus, I still come from a time when one had to work with floppy disks under DOS, later came Windows 3.1, 3.11, Windows 95 etc. Those who still know these times also know that you can sometimes be seen in a weekly rhythm, e.g. I had to reboot Windows 95. Why? because once again nothing worked and the reinstallation had to be done, so I taught myself the Windows and its peculiarities. The 2012 MacBook Air was purchased, turned on, and works just like day one. So I only dealt with MacOS in a very superficial way, which did not really help me with the Hackintosh project. “The typical Mac user,” quote from the Hackintosh community.

But up to that point I was firmly convinced that I could do it without any help from others. This was possible with Windows in the past and the Internet did not exist in its present form. I downloaded the program “MacOS Catalina Patcher”, from dosdude1, to my MacBook Air, with which I was able to download a complete version of Catalina. Which was then 8.24 GB in size. So much for the fact that an 8 GB stick should be sufficient. This statement can be found everywhere on the Internet. Fortunately I had a much bigger one at the start. So stick it back into MacBook Air and mount the drive. Check!

Format the drive again. Check! create Catalina as boot stick via MacOS Catalina Patcher. Can’t! Grrrr… Several attempts to create the stick via terminal also fail. Cause unknown until today! 60 cm error (my distance to the monitor) was probably the reason. A solution had to be found, because Igor wants his minced meat stew served warm. So I took my work colleague to help me and he created two boat sticks, one Catalina and one Mojave as backup. So Catalina Stick was there, now the bootloader is missing. So let’s quickly run Unibeast according to the instructions, now I could also click through the menu to the end.

The installation bar runs loose and breaks off again! it was just frustrating. I needed the next backup, so I put Clover on the flash drive. Instructions from the YouTube videos and the stick was ready. So far so good. Check!

Seeing the budding Hackintosh in this view for the first time was a good feeling. Full of euphoria clicked on Start UEFI and what happens? Right, nothing at all! The Hackintosh expert has long since found the error in the picture. There’s nothing the bootloader could have loaded! it wasn’t funny anymore! from here on i finally realized that i myself suffer from very strong kevinism and that it’s not going to work. At least not in a short time! Insight is the first way to healing!

If you get stuck, you form a working group. So seek help from the professionals. I placed a post in the Hackintosh forum and from that point on, events started to take a positive turn. The help of al6042 was immediately effective, even if I had difficulties in understanding what I was supposed to do at first. Disabling the Intel Core i9-9900K’s integrated GPU was the easiest of all tasks here.

At this point I give the floor to my colleague al6042 from Hackintosh-Forum:

  • “Considering the hardware, I would suggest that you disable the internal graphics of the CPU in the BIOS and take a look at the EFI package under …”
  • “To test, rename the EFI folder on the EFI partition of your Install Stick to “EFI old” and copy the contents of the ZIP in its place
  • “Then rename “CLOVER-CFL” of the EFI package to “CLOVER” and in it rename “config-imacpro11.plist” to “config.plist” and try the installation again.”

And lo and behold, now the Clover Bootloader has also found something!
