The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Ti, a GPU that was originally planned as the flagship of the Ada-Lovelace architecture, has once again surfaced in images. The card was found by a Reddit user who claims to have salvaged it from a dumpster. This confirms once again the existence of this model, which NVIDIA has not officially released. But it also raises questions about its credibility.
The suspected RTX 4090 Ti features a design that differs from previous NVIDIA cards. It is equipped with a quad-slot cooler, which makes the card significantly larger than the current models in the RTX 40 series. The card could cover the entire lower half of an ATX motherboard as well as all PCI-E slots. It is worth noting that the power connector is located on the side and rotated 90 degrees, presumably to solve space problems. In addition, the display connectors are not directly on the motherboard, but on a side-mounted PCB.
NVIDIA had set itself the goal of getting the maximum possible performance out of the Ada architecture with the RTX 4090 Ti. According to reports, however, this failed due to the high performance requirements and design challenges. The RTX 4090, the current top model in the series, is already approaching its technical limits in terms of power consumption. The larger RTX 4090 Ti would probably have increased these requirements even further.
There were also rumors that the card was originally planned as part of the TITAN series, a product line from NVIDIA that traditionally offers high-performance models with extensive technical specifications. The exact memory configuration of the card is not known, but previous leaks suggest that it could have been equipped with 24 GB or 48 GB GDDR6X memory. The unusual design and the high technical requirements may have been the main reasons why NVIDIA discontinued the project. In view of the fact that there is no direct competition to the RTX 4090, an additional Ti variant does not appear to have been necessary from a business perspective. In addition, the massive cooler design with its weight and space requirements may have been considered impractical for the end user.
The card was last discussed about a month ago when a picture of its I/O panel circulated on the net. At that time, everything indicated that it was a 3-slot design. The model that has now surfaced with a 4-slot heat sink could either be a later version or an alternative design. The Reddit user who found the card has not yet posted any information about whether it is functional. However, the PCB appears to be complete, suggesting that it could be a final or near-final test model.
It is unclear how the card ended up in the trash and why it was disposed of. The RTX 4090 Ti remains an example of the technical and practical limitations that even leading manufacturers like NVIDIA face. The discovery of the card raises questions about development decisions and the limits of current GPU technologies. Whether NVIDIA will bring back such a card in any form in the future is uncertain. However, the current find shows that the RTX 4090 Ti did in fact exist and was probably developed until shortly before its release.
