Aircooling Cooling Reviews

U12S chromax.black in review – Small cooling protz in dark outfit

Since I do not have air conditioning, the values in the graphs are the delta between room temperature and temperature of the CPU. Thus, all coolings can be compared fairly, even if the ambient temperature is different. The thermal conductive paste enclosed with the cooler is used.

Test hardware CPU: Ryzen 5 1600X – 4.00Ghz – 1.40V
RAM: 16GB DDR4 G.Skill RipJaws 4 red (2x8GB)
Mainboard: Asus Prime B350-Plus
Graphics card: Asus RoG Strix GTX 1060 6GB
Power supply: BitFenix Whisper M 450W
Case: Thermaltake Core P3 – Open Benchtable
Test software Aida64 Extreme 6.10.5200
CPU, FPU, Cache, System Memory Stress Test
Prime95 29.8b6
Small FFTs – Maximum Heat Stress Test

First, we simulate normal use with Aida64 by loading all components at the same time. Although this does not result in the maximum CPU load and temperature, it is most likely to reflect everyday life. First, I let the fan run at 50% of the speed, almost inaudible, with the temperature peak at approx. 66°C for the GPU.  The graphic shows the respective delta to the room temperature:

If you let the whole thing run at 100%, it is still calmingly quiet, but much cooler, the temperature peaks are also correspondingly lower at up to 60°C.

Well, let’s get down to 50% and run Prime. The CPU now reports 74 °C, which is still in the green area, but not very nice. A little more air is needed for this extreme situation:

Now the whole thing again at 100% – it stays quiet and becomes one again: quite cool! With less than 65 °C for the CPU, you can fall asleep more than calmly next to the PC.

Conclusion and summary

Those who have been deterred by the idiosyncratic, brownish color can now risk a second look. The fan no longer looks like a smoker’s household and the rest also fits visually. The measurements have yielded nothing to the contrary and so the slightly smaller cooler from the Noctua-Riege turns into a real cooling personality. Noctua can therefore live up to the reputation and expectations that the NF-U12S – in any colour – offers an air cooler that is strong for its compactness and, above all, very quiet.

In terms of price, however, one is already in the range of cheap 240mm AiO water coolingsystems, so this cooler will appear as a reference in further reviews in the future. In terms of cooling performance, however, he does not have to hide from an AiO.
