What do you get when you wrap a bunch of brightly lit Cherry MX Blue switches in a very classy robe? For example the Thermaltake Argent K5 RGB! Whether this massive typewriter is really a pure gaming keyboard, you can read in today’s review. When I hear the name Thermaltake, I can’t help but think of fans with orange rotor blades. Surely a pioneer in the field of cooling solutions and fancy cases, I had my doubts how an input device of this manufacturer would do. Spoiler: Damn good! Following the example of some renowned memory manufacturers, Thermaltake is also preparing to challenge the big top dogs.
Argent, by the way, is derived from Argentum, the Latin word for silver. When looking at the keyboard, whose keys are embedded in a thick silver-colored aluminum plate, the name suddenly makes sense. Without using superlatives like “best”, “fastest” or “greatest”, Thermaltake simply advertises its top model as a gaming keyboard. The keyboard doesn’t really deserve this rating, which many users consider rather derogatory, as it turned out in the course of the test. But first, let’s free the good piece from its packaging.
Unboxing and features
The packaging in plain silver-grey is already noble.
The black-silver keyboard with the curved aluminum plate has been stripped of the protective foils and no colorful illumination and looks absolutely serious and not at all like gaming.
The printing on the keycaps is sharp and very legible – but the font could have been a bit more classic for my taste.
On the top right are the media buttons and the massive rotary control for adjusting the volume. This one is also made of Aliminium and feels great.
Due to the curved design, the right third of the keyboard is a bit darker. The exposed Cherry switches are also clearly visible at this point.
The thick connecting cable is wrapped in a rigid braid.
Next to the connection cable there is also a USB 2.0 port, which can be excellently used for the transmitter of a wireless mouse, and a 3.5mm combo jack for connecting a headset.
The non-slip feet can be adjusted to a total of three positions. Collapsed:

The palm rest is without a doubt the best I’ve had in my fingers in terms of feel and padding.
The coolest feature of the palm rest, the magnetic attachment, is also its stumbling block, because the magnet is simply too weak to hold the rest in place when the keyboard is repositioned. At least if you move the keyboard sideways.
Besides the keyboard, a handful of red keycaps, a tool for disassembling them and a guide are included.
The blue Cherry switches are hidden under the keycaps, which in my opinion are rather addressed to frequent typists than to gamers.
