First of all, this comparison is not about the cards themselves against each other, the focus here is on what performance can be achieved in an eGPU case with the port used, which card works best with it, at what point a general limitation by the port takes effect and how high the difference is compared to a desktop system, especially when using the integrated panel. All cards went through a run each with the integrated panel (in the charts “Internal”), as well as connected to an external FHD display via HDMI (“External”). FHD and UHD come into play as resolutions.
The synthetic benchmarks still represent the best case, here we usually have little communication with the system, bandwidth and latencies play a smaller role here than in games.
Superposition 1080p Extreme
At first glance, it’s noticeable that the Radeons lose massively with the internal panel. A 6700XT is only marginally faster than a 3060. The discount on the Radeons is almost 30%. The 3060 delivers a very constant performance, the 3070 is already increasingly affected by the bandwidth limit, especially with the internal display, but the 3070 nevertheless “only” loses almost 14% in performance compared to a desktop system.
3DMark TimeSpy
Here, the losses of all cards are much more serious, especially when using the internal panel. The RX 5700XT which should actually calculate faster here than the 3060 delivers a very poor picture, almost 50% performance loss when using the internal panel! The 6700 XT also loses massively here and almost falls to the level of the 3060. The 3070 loses more in total than the 3060, here the bandwidth limit takes hold more strongly with increasing performance.
3DMark TimeSpy Extreme
In UHD, the losses are now significantly lower, even when using the internal panel. With the use of an external panel, one now loses “only” a little over 10%. The 3060 shows the sweet spot with the lowest losses. The 5700 XT still does well on the external panel, but then drops massively when used on the internal panel.
3DMark Firestrike
In Firestrike you can see the bandwidth limitation best, here high frame rates are reached by the current cards. The discounts are correspondingly high. Good to see the cap at around ~24000 points. To my surprise, the Geforce cards lose significantly more than the Radeons here, and we’ll see this again in a similar form in the gaming benchmarks later. The RTX 3070 is left with only 40% of its original performance, and the 3060 loses almost 50% as well. The 6700XT still looks pretty good in comparison, albeit at a low level. The Vega APU almost cuts a good figure here compared to the values on the internal panel.
