Lower middle class in showdown: Intel Core i5 10400F vs. AMD Ryzen 5 3600 together with the right motherboard in comparison – Same price and same speed?

Power consumption of the CPU (entire package)

If you run the Intel Core i5-10400F in the way CPU and board manufacturers would like it to be, then it’s one thing to enjoy the load. The CPU is surprisingly frugal in gaming and is clearly ahead of the two Ryzens, especially since it was the fastest of the trio in the measured and underlying benchmark. This shows once again where AMD’s small disadvantages lie with Zen2, which will be replaced soon.

Under full load, it all turns a little bit. The Ryzen 5 3600, which is somewhat faster in multi-threaded applications, is even a bit more economical, while the Ryzen 3 3300X wins at least on the power outlet. However, there are also the sometimes significant performance disadvantages, so that everything quickly becomes relative again.

Summary and conclusion

The Intel Core i5-10400F isn’t a bad CPU in itself and in direct comparison to AMD’s Ryzen 5 3600 together with the substructure as a complete package, it’s a bit equally expensive. A year or two ago, you would hardly have dreamed of that. The gaming performance still sets the real standards in this new price class, with a few exceptions, even though the air has become very thin. If you then include a standard, clearly cheaper graphic card in the calculation, the differences become almost completely blurred.

But that’s exactly when the Ryzen 3 3300X comes in, which I see here as a nice troublemaker. If you’re just looking for something quickly for next year or the transition, you’re almost in better hands. Otherwise, it is probably up to each individual to decide which (manufacturer) choice to make. Both sockets, both the 1200 from Intel and the AM4 from AMD are already condemned to foreseeable extinction. One more generation and then something new will come anyway. Therefore, the idea of not getting into such a high price at the moment is quite interesting. Because the Core i5-10400F is even slightly better than the former flagship Core i7-8700K, which you can still find in many gaming PCs today.

Thus, the Core i5-10400F is probably currently the most attractive gaming CPU from Intel when it comes to not burdening the budget too much. This is certainly also a very interesting finding.
