Optics and haptics
All around the Rival 5 is made of matte ABS plastic in black, the only colored accents are the later illuminated RGB stripes, Steelseries logo and a silver thumb button. On the underside are the two large, curved sliding feet.
Small cut-outs next to the pads should make replacement easier.
The stars of the show are the five buttons on the left side. And no, I did not miscount! The top long button is not a button, but rather acts like a small lever. And so you can assign different actions to tilt up or down. For me it was the first time to see such a feature on a mouse. A bit unusual at the beginning, but with a little practice it can be used sensibly.
In the view from the front or back, it is easy to see that the Rival 5 was also designed for right-handers due to its shape.
Accordingly, the mouse lies well in my hand, and the size fits very well. I have a palm grip myself, but according to Steelseries’ illustrations, the fingertip grip should also be fine. They also mention Claw in the details, but don’t show him in the pictures:
The USB cable is tightly braided and firmly attached to the mouse. There is no symbol on the plug for easier assignment, but that’s complaining on a high level. The workmanship is very good and gives no cause for criticism, as it should in this price range.
