The upcoming AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9000 CPU, which is based on the Zen 5 core architecture, was recently spotted in a mail-order catalog, reports NBD. The processor, codenamed “Shimada Peak”, is said to have up to 96 cores and 192 threads. This configuration consists of 12 chiplet dies (CCDs), each comprising 8 cores and 32 MB of L3 cache. A single I/O die completes the architecture.
The Threadripper 9000 series has not yet appeared in any public AMD roadmap. Officially, the company has only announced the “Zen 5” products Ryzen 9000 “Granite Ridge”, Ryzen AI 300 “Strix Point” and the 5th generation of the EPYC series with the code name “Turin”. The discovery in the mail order catalog indicates that AMD is working on a new generation of Threadripper CPUs to replace the current Zen 4-based Ryzen Threadripper and Threadripper PRO 7000 series.
This new generation of CPUs could be aimed at a similar target group as the previous Threadripper PRO 7995WX, which is also equipped with 96 cores, 192 threads and 384 MB L3 cache on the SP6 platform. This platform is also used by the EPYC “Sienna” series, which indicates that AMD could maintain continuity in terms of platform compatibility.
AMD currently offers two variants of the Threadripper CPUs: The Threadripper PRO series for the WRX90 platform, which offers support for 8-channel memory, and the Ryzen Threadripper series for the TRX50 platform with 4-channel memory support. It remains to be seen whether AMD will retain the same clock rates for the new CPUs as for the Ryzen 9000 “Granite Ridge” family or whether changes will be made. The thermal power dissipation (TDP) of the new CPUs is likely to be around 350 watts, similar to the previous models.
It is unlikely that AMD will launch the new Ryzen Threadripper and Threadripper PRO 9000 “Zen 5” CPUs on the market this year. An official announcement date is still pending, but a presentation could take place at one of the upcoming events, possibly in October. AMD is also expected to present new products in the areas of professional workstations and artificial intelligence.
