With the Seasonic MagFlow 120 mm, Seasonic wants to reorient the market a little bit. Simple, high-performance and above all RGB-free, and the most important feature is a magnetically clickable daisy chain without superfluous cable assembly. Lian Li, we are coming (now too)! Click & Run for even more fun? Of course, acceptance will show whether the concept works out, but the previous sole proprietor of magnetic connections is being boldly attacked from obscurity. The chances are good that a real niche can be filled here, especially since the performance is also good. I can and will spoil that in advance.
The price also includes the quite rare feature set with the click-me! daisy chain (see also picture gallery below), so the 29.90 Euro RRP and the 89.90 Euro RRP for the 3-pack are completely in the high-end segment. Well, Corsair can do that without the Daisy in monochrome even more expensive, but that is certainly not a meaningful comparison. Yes, the price is hot, but today we want to question whether it is justified. Cheaper is always possible, but the more comfortable life is not so easy anymore.
The spec sheet reads unspectacularly different. With 217.7 grams, the MagFlow 120 is already in the range of good 140 models, but this is also due to the magnet. The manufacturer states the thickness (installation depth) very honestly with 26.6 mm instead of the usual 25 mm. You need to know this to be able to be really sure, because the thickness is often secretly tricked and even one or two millimeters are added without any indication. And then comes the contradiction between the case and the motherboard when nothing fits in between. The height of 12 cm is in the normal size, the width carries up to 14.2 cm because of the closure. But that was to be expected.
The bearing is a standard hydrodynamic plain bearing (FDB) with all the known advantages and disadvantages, but with gratifyingly little clearance. The gaps of no more than 1 mm between the rotor and frame are extra class, and the surface finish is definitely not objectionable. The fairly neutral black is perfectly fine and it is neither too bluish nor too yellowish. Everything is labeled Sea Sonic, even the UL number on the label for the North American does not reveal any further details. But the OEM has put a lot of effort into the quality
The frame is decoupled via integrated rubber applications at the four corners. It works, but it’s not really that innovative. By the way, the usual 4 screws for the case are also included, as well as a magnetic clickable connection cable for each fan.
Technical data
For a short overview, I will now show you the data sheet:
On the next page you will first see how and what we test and why. Understanding the details is incredibly important in order to be able to objectively classify the results later on. The differences between many models are more in the details and the best fan for all situations can hardly exist. There is a certain optimum in every situation and, of course, good all-rounders. But they usually have their price. However, if you are planning very specifically with 60 mm radiators, for example, you might be able to save money by choosing the best model for your intended use, which might not perform so well as a case fan. And vice versa, of course.
