Aircooling Cooling Reviews

Scythe Fuma 2 in test – Asymmetric all-rounder for hot hours

Test and methodology

A Ryzen 5 3600 has to be cooled with factory settings, in addition to 16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport (2x8GB) DDR4 memory on a MSI B550 Tomahawk (BIOS 7C91vA3).
The Asus ROG Strix GTX 1060 6GB runs for the CPU stress tests only for the image output in zero-fan mode and a BitFenix Whisper M 450W is used as power source.

All data sets are logged with HWInfo64 v6.30-4240 – 2000ms Logging, the specified temperature is derived from the sensor CPU Die (Average). Since I don’t have an air conditioning system, the values in the graphs are the delta between room temperature and CPU temperature. In this way all cooling systems can be compared fairly, even if the ambient temperature is different.
The heat-conducting paste enclosed with the cooler or applied in advance is used.

Benchmarks

For the first set of data, the cooler would run with two fans at different speeds:

2 fans

30% PWM

60% PWM

100% PWM

Speed Slim

330 RPM

730 RPM

1175 RPM

Speed 120

510 RPM

895 RPM

1305 RPM

Sound characteristics

Silent

Very low whirring

Low whirring

Ambient temperature

22,2 – 21,8°C

23,0 – 23,1°C

22,9 – 23,2°C

In the next run I removed the front narrow fan:

1 fan

30% PWM

60% PWM

100% PWM

Speed 120

520 RPM

900 RPM

1290 RPM

Sound characteristics

Silent

Very low whirring

Low whirring

Ambient temperature

23,1 – 22,9°C

21,0 – 21,4°C

21,6 – 21,7°C

In the overall view, it can be seen that the thin 17mm slim fan actually makes another 1-2°C difference.
Even in direct comparison to the somewhat more expensive (and larger) Assassin III, the Fuma 2 doesn’t have to hide itself, although the Deepcool Killer can offer much more air up on hotter CPUs.

Conclusion / Summary

Looking at the overall package offered here, the popularity of the Fuma 2 is quite understandable. The combination of good cooling performance, quiet operation, compatibility with many housings and a suitable price is a recipe for success – who is surprised?
With its grey-black design, it can also be easily integrated into most PC artwork without upsetting the carefully composed colour scheme. If you really want to take the very last point for an absolute bestseller, the only thing missing is the version with RGB fixed day lighting.

But until then, I can only give a recommendation for this simple all-rounder!
