Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT Pulse Review – Navi with certain vibrations

Sapphire's first Navi card is with the Pulse actually the entry model, if one follows the previous nomenclature of the manufacturer. This also entails compromises and today we will sound out which and what this means for the customer.

There is a fan stop, the hysteresis is well solved and the fans only turn when you really need them. While the OC-BIOS still has speeds of up to 1650 rpm, the Silent-BIOS’s speeds drop to 1530 rpm, depending on the case and airflow. That’s a useful value and we’ll see how loud it is in the end. But the fan curve looks a bit restless and jagged. And that’s exactly what you hear.

This doesn’t look any different in the stress test, by the way.

Let us look at the measured values once again in direct comparison as a tabular list:

  OC BIOS
Silent BIOS
Fan speed Maximum 1683 rpm 1578 rpm
Fan speed Average 1652 rpm
1532 rpm
Noise Emission (Air) Average 41.4 rpm 38.2 dB(A)
Noise Emission (Air) Idle Fan Stop Fan Stop
Sound Characteristics noisy, low-frequency components, strongly oscillating noisy, low-frequency components, strongly oscillating
Coil Whining very low, only during high frame rates and load changes very low, only during high frame rates and load changes

Sound Spectrum

The measured 41.4 dB(A) are based on the measured approx. 1650 rpm in a closed case. I applied the same gaming load to the open benchtable in the measurement room, but fixed the fans at approx. 1650 rpm in order to be able to adjust this value as accurately as possible. We can see the result in the spectogram. And if we remember the serrated fan curve of just now, then we also see the superimposed frequencies of the engine noises by means of two spikes, the frequency mixture of which is oscillating – up to floating frequencies and exactly that is extremely annoying.

Here you can hear the oscillation, from second 12 the sound even cancels itself out:

With the Silent BIOS it gets a little quieter in the room, but not quiet. The 38.2 dB(A) are still acceptable and it could have been even better if it wasn’t for the engine noise and the lower frequency resonances. The oscillation due to overlapping frequencies is also quite annoying here.

The sound backdrop is not extremely intrusive in itself, but one should have bought at least one higher quality level for the fans. The resulting frequency mix is really annoying.
