Six months have now passed and Samsung has already carried out several firmware (FW) updates since then. My main criticism was that the Odyssey OLED G8 could only develop its full HDR potential – the 1000 nits peak – with an NVIDIA GPU. Despite a FreeSync Premium Pro certification. The FW updates released in the meantime have basically resolved the issue of the monitor waking up on “cold start”. The display latency remains at 3.6 ms even after prolonged use and no longer suddenly jumps to 20 ms.
The update process as such initially drove me crazy. It could only be done manually via USB stick after downloading the update from the Samsung homepage and unpacking it onto the USB stick according to the instructions. The auto-update function in the OSD was basically completely useless. To my surprise, I discovered that I had automatically updated from FW 1604 to 1622. Of course, the community had to point this out to me via the forum, which brings us to today’s article. My thanks go to the community at this point!
Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 Review – A QD OLED monitor with that certain something and a few weaknesses
Today I will focus on the HDR topic and test it in particular with an AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT. (The RX 7900 XT is part of a larger case test project – just to spoil something)
At the same time, I’ll show you my OSD settings when I’m gaming (with and without HDR), or how I use the sRGB mode. There’s also a very brief description of my test system and the software and hardware used here on the next page.
