Our friend Yuri (1usmus) made an interesting discovery in the course of working on the new Clock Tuner for Ryzen (CTR) 2.0 for the Zen3 CPUs and the implementation of AMD’s API, because although both the Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 7 5800X are actually made with only one chiplet (CCD), some time before Christmas 2020 models have been spotted with two CCDs physically present as well. This can even be read out with suitable means, according to Yuri.
The programmer points out that even when reading out a different table exists for monitoring, which then contains twice as many entries for these CPUs as a CPU with only one CCD provides. By the way, the Ryzens sent to the press seem to have been binned, as all of them reach Gold status in the CTR rating system, as well as a single CCD.
For example, Yuri could see that CCD #1, while not available for normal operation, was not actually shut down. Besides the still active power supply, the CCD was in the so-called Deep Sleep Mode, which of course is a de-facto shutdown (which also makes sense). Nevertheless, sporadic “life drawings” could be recorded from time to time, as the clock in the monitoring increased to 550 MHz.
We suspect that this is a Ryzen 9 that was sorted out after the fact, with the Ryzen 5 5600X pictured here suggesting a faulty Ryzen 9 5900X that may not have passed quality testing. That’s not a bad thing per se, because the demand for all current Ryzen CPUs is extremely high and you can also use supposed rejects. However, it is suspected that the overclocking margins might be a bit smaller. However, the presence of a second, deactivated CCD will not affect normal operation, that is also certain.
In principle, it might certainly be possible to find a way to use both CCDs and cancel the disabled area. However, this raises the question of the effort and, above all, the reasons for deactivation. Because AMD will hardly “demote” the margin-bringing Ryzen 9 to Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 without a good reason. But we also like to remember AMD’s three-core Athlon II X3 and Phenom II X3, where the disabled fourth core could often be unlocked via BIOS without any problems.
I have the current CTR already internally in the test and will offer the program then after the release by Yuri also here on the side officially to the download and support. As a guideline for the date, the month change between January and February should be set. But we are still testing.
