Core renovation, stripping, plastering and painting? No, you have not made a mistake in the website! Even if it seems at first glance richly offtopic, I would like to share a "small" heart project with you today. I turned a damp basement room into a modern office to work and test, gamble and hang out in and also documented the whole thing a bit….
Foreword
When we visited this house at the end of June, it was immediately clear to us that we would move in here. Lots of space, a huge backyard, quiet neighborhood, and a large, unused room in the basement that immediately conjured up a vision when I walked in: this will be my gaming room! Pardon.. Home office of course, you have to package a project of this scale somehow nice that the woman waves it off. Since I work 90% of the time in my home office and do a bit of studying on the side and write the odd review for Igor's Lab, I have to have a space to retreat to and be productive, right? As it happens, the room is just a bit bigger that you might be able to set up a little gaming corner. And a craft table. And a TV, refrigerator and coffee maker! What? Oh, I was just thinking out loud and fantasizing…
Inventory
As it turned out after moving in, it wasn't just due to not using, not airing, and not renovating the room that there was a pretty musty smell in the air.
When the previous tenants had moved out and all the stuff had been removed, only then did it become apparent what was really going on. The outer wall was damp:
Everywhere the plaster was already falling off the wall:
In places, we had even seen the formation of mildew stains and the crystallization of salts on the plaster. Fine!
The moisture meter revealed that this was guaranteed to be not just poor ventilation, but that the entire masonry was damp and thus most likely the exterior waterproofing would need to be replaced. Is such an effort even worth it? And what do you think the owner of the house says? Fortunately, we quickly came to an agreement, found a good compromise and I was given more or less a free hand.
