Quietly and secretly: Intel ends its support for Deep Link

Just presented in 2022 and already history again: Intel has discontinued its ambitious Deep Link project after just three years. This means that the technology will not receive any further updates.

Surprisingly, the decision was not communicated via Intel’s official channels. Instead, the information came to light through a post in the official GitHub thread. There, a user reported problems with the OBS streaming software, which were apparently related to Deep Link. An OBS employee responded and clarified that the problem was not with OBS, but was due to driver problems. A month later, the user Zack-Intel then revealed that there would be important changes for Deep Link. Namely, the project will no longer be worked on and no more updates will be delivered.

Hi @SapphireDrew

I wanted to reach out to let you know about a change regarding the Intel® Deep Link features. Deep Link is no longer actively maintained and will not be receiving future updates, meaning that there will be no changes to the features regardless of their current functionality status.

I understand this might impact how you use the feature, and I want you to know that we’re here to help. For more information on the scope and requirements of Deep Link, you can check out this article: Information on Intel® Deep Link Technologies

If you have any questions about this, feel free to reach out in our community forums for further information.

But what exactly was Deep Link? With this technology, Intel wanted to improve the cooperation between the company’s own CPUs and GPUs. The aim was to distribute system resources more intelligently and thereby increase overall performance. Deep Link offered various functions such as Dynamic Power Share, Hyper Encode, Additive AI and Stream Assist – all features that were geared towards different user needs. As development is now complete, it is unlikely that existing bugs will be fixed in the future.

(read full article...)
