Powercolor RX 5700 XT Red Devil in review – Force is mass times acceleration

Powercolor sets a decent fragrance brand with the RX 5700 XT Red Devil - both in terms of performance and the massive cooler as well as in terms of price. There is also a Silent BIOS that really honors its name. But I don't want to spoil, I want to test. So it's best to read for yourself.

There is a fan stop, the hysteresis is well solved and the fans only rotate when you really need them. In the OC-BIOS, there are still approx. 1750 rpm, the speeds in the Silent BIOS drop to approx. 1100 rpm, depending on the housing and airflow. This is a more than good value and at least with the Silent-BIOS absolutely perfect for really quiet systems. Well done, Powercolor!

By the way, this is no different with the stress test.

Let's look at the measured values again in direct comparison to the Founders Edition as a tabular listing:

  OC BIOS
Silent BIOS
Fan speeds Maximum 1800 rpm 1164 rpm
Fan speeds Average 1759 rpm 1154 rpm
Noise Emission (Air) Average 36.8 dB(A) 31.9 dB(A)
Noise Emission (Air) Idle Fan Stop Fan Stop
Sound characteristic / hearing impression rushing, slight lower frequency shares hardly audible noise, slight resonances
Coil-feathers/electric noises very low, only for very high FPS numbers and for load changes very low, only for very high FPS numbers and for load changes

Sound Spectrum

The measured 36.8 dB(A) are based on the measured approx. 1750 rpm in closed housing. I applied the same gaming load to the open set-up in the measuring room, but the fans were set to approx. fixed at 1750 rpm in order to be able to adjust this value as precisely as possible. We can see the results in the spectogram.

With the Silent BIOS, it becomes quiet in the room. The 31.9 dB(A) is an absolute peak value for such an AMD card and it could have been even better if it weren't for the engine noise and the lower-frequency resonances if all three fans were running at roughly the same speed.

The soundscape is pleasant, never disturbing and the card deserves a lot of praise for the cooling performance AND the noise emission!
