Environmental Testing

The various temperature and climatic conditions (humidity) are also an important component. After all, a power supply unit has to function (and last) just as reliably at noon in Africa as it does in the far north of Finland or the subtropics. For this purpose, extreme situations are simulated, with the help of which it is possible to play it safe in the end.

If the power supply unit passes this test, it is guaranteed to be suitable for all intended places of use and you are also protected against possible environmental influences, such as those that can occur during shipping or storage. Things such as mechanical damage, inadequately dimensioned components or inappropriate connections can thus be detected before mass production and remedied after the causes have been investigated. These tests are running at full load, as we can see from the Chroma standing next to it.

Temperature shock

In principle, the shock test is a continuation of the environmental test, but allows the cooling, or better freezing, tested here to proceed much faster. It is not by chance that the term shock is used here, because this strain must first be overcome.

However, this is a pure material test, which is not carried out with a net partial load. However, in this test all possible material defects and data sheet deviations are mercilessly revealed when the test candidates have to undergo a functional test after the test. Many a hairline crack or one or the other incorrectly dimensioned component have already ensured that a power supply unit had to be put to the test again by the engineers.

Burn-in test

The opposite of cold is hot and so every power supply has to be put into the sweatbox for a longer period of time under full operation. 

Here, the new prototypes have to prove that they can withstand loads and overloads over a longer period of time without damage, even under extremely high temperatures. So this time it is a combined test for circuit design, component selection and cooling concept.

Erinnere mich noch an den Artikel. Sehr schön aber mit 7 schon Retro so alt ist das doch gar nicht......

Naja, damals noch TH Deutschland. Das ist schon arg Retro. Ich konnte die Artikel nur bis zu einem gewissen Punkt retten, weil damals die Franzosen den Bilderserver abgeschaltet hatten. Einer der Gründe, warum die Amis nicht migrieren wollten. Nur Chaos. Den Großteil ab 2010 habe ich per http quasi "außenrum" runtergesichert, weil nicht mal mehr Passwörter für den Server existierten. :(

Ich kann mich auch noch daran erinnern. Umso besser, das du diesen Artikel noch retten konntest.
Sehr interessant in mal wieder durchflogen zu haben.
Wo sind nur die Jahre geblieben. Wahnsinn wie schnell die Zeit vergeht.
