On discovery tour: How safe, durable and quiet power supplies are created | Retro

Many things run in parallel during development, including tests on the electronics, the development of the case and – as with the Straight Power E10 – also that of a completely new type of fan. That’s why the individual prototypes never really look ready for sale, and they are only finalized as far as is necessary for the respective test.

As we have seen in the last few pages, there are still many changes that can occur during the development and testing period. The next picture shows such a process very clearly. The first power supply sits in an old case, the middle one already in a newer one – and both are intermediate solutions. Only the right one then also has a fan, but has less ornaments that aren’t necessary for the tests. The fan comes along with a modified design of the opening, which resulted in measurable bottom line improvements.

It is precisely these subtleties that, in coordination with the board design and the arrangement and design of the relevant components (e.g. heat sinks), ensure good cooling AND quiet operation. But you have to undergo this very time-consuming process and (want to) bear the costs for it. By the way, the term “golden sample” really exists. However, this does not mean specially prepared power supplies for curious testers, but rather the last samples that are still mainly produced manually as small series before the actual start of mass production. These prototypes have then all done their duty

The new E10 from be quiet! were also tested in the form of these Golden Samples in real operation with current graphics cards in order to do justice to the problem of fast load changes. As we wrote in our previous basic article about graphics cards and power supply problems – it’s not without what the power supplies are subjected to in reality and it’s hard to simulate this load change behavior with a Chroma.
