Cooling performance
First, we stress the AiO compact water cooling. For this purpose, we have overclocked the Core i7-5930K up to 4.8 GHz to achieve the 250 watt maximum package power. Typical in gaming, however, are rather between 75 and 115 watts, which we measured depending on the game with the CPU at 4.2 GHz manually raised clock (turbo-core, not multiplier!).
The fact is that the Raijintek Orcus remains quite quiet at less than 200 watts and still allows a relatively cool operation. We use the variable speed for the fans via the motherboard control, whereby the full speeds are only at approx. 90°C. In the typical gaming load, they are then at a very moderate 800-850 rpm, which tends towards the quiet treader.
Thus, there was nothing wrong with the new cooling, on the contrary. But the often annoying siren of the small pumps could be kept well away from the housing thanks to the positioning in the hose.
Graphic benchmarks
The Intel Core i7-5930K, which is overclocked at a rather moderate 4.2 GHz, can still keep up with a much newer system today. That is the good news ahead. But how does the MSI GTX 980 Ti Lightning perform? Thanks to its quite high clock, it is always within striking distance of the newer GeForce GTX 1070, which is of course not a bad starting position when you consider the price.
In the first game we screwed the graphics presets to stop and tested them only in Full HD. With the result, the card is in the good midfield and doesn’t have to hide. Only games we wouldn’t even play with these settings on the GeForce GTX 1080. If you lower the settings one or two steps, the installed card with well over 80 FPS then runs again butter-soft. So it’s fitting.
Why the latest AMD cards are so good in Dawn of War. Nevertheless, we chose the benchmark very consciously, because in the price segment around 350 euros you will not be offered as much performance as with our Boliden from the old days. While the GeForce GTX 1070 remains in sight, the mid-range cards, like a Radeon RX 580, have to hide almost in shame, although they are hardly cheaper (due to the mining boom).
Also in Battlefield 1, the old MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Lightning is well in the running and would probably be even faster than the GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition. With this you can live calmly and certainly get there for a while in terms of performance.
Summary and conclusion
It doesn’t always have to land in the bay when there is a new generation of technology. In return, however, it is worth picking up such things quickly if you get offered them cheaply and they are not too old yet. With Intel processors, it may well be 2-3 generations that have elapsed, with Nvidia graphics cards at least one. At AMD, things are looking rather bad because of the mining boom, and the Fury generation hasn’t been so widespread on their part. Anything before that, however, would hardly make any economic sense.
So we see that with a nice optical packaging and some effort (when searching) you can still build fine things out of past treasures, provided some time and goodwill. Well, a little courage and a willingness to take risks should not be missing, if one does not find exactly in one’s own kinship. Experiment succeeded? But sure…
