Self-experiment for second life: former high-end instead of current middle class | Retro

Disclaimer: The following article is machine translated from the original German, and has not been edited or checked for errors. Thank you for understanding!

Today I have dug out for Sunday once for you a contribution, which lies only plentifully 4 years back. Shooting at sparrows with cannons? In the days of normal hardware prices, that was also somewhat en vogue, because in 2018, even graphics cards didn’t cost amounts that could have been collected for illegal organ donations. And it’s also clear: Car comparisons are of course worse than the single-engine Beelzebub, admittedly. But while we’re on the subject… What is the tank in a Polo, can be the socket in older graphics cards. Whereby: if you’re really honest with yourself, then the few cents per year are almost more silly than the car comparison as such. And it will probably get even worse in the near future. So let’s just leave it at that and concentrate on the essentials and dive into 2018!

Fundus: What’s going on in old?

Let’s start with the graphics card. A used GeForce GTX 980 Ti is now from 350 euros. With all the risks and side effects, but you can take a closer look. And mining wasn’t an issue with these bolides, thank God. Currently, you would get a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or a Radeon RX 580 for this money (if you could buy it). However, both cards are slower! A good custom solution of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti is (almost) as fast as a GeForce GTX 1070, which would be significantly more expensive with over 400 euros for an inexpensive model.

Still quite fast: MSI GTX 980 Ti LightningStill quite fast: MSI GTX 980 Ti Lightning

With the CPU, we hit correctly. An “old” Intel Core i7-5930K with matching board? Anyone who compares the homeopathic gains of the individual generations will hardly be surprised what such a Bolide can still achieve with some OC. Between 200 and 250 euros will still have to be spent, which is roughly equivalent to a Ryzen 5 1600X.

Six cores against six cores, but the Core i7 i7-5930K runs stable and loose yet its 4.2 GHz (or much more), the Ryzen can only dream of it. Of course, a Ryzen 7 1700 with 8 cores, which could run its 3.9 GHz, also goes. Together with a savings bun motherboard, this would also be priced. But the two nuclei don’t make the whole thing any faster.

X99S motherboards at a small priceX99S motherboards at a small price Peiswerte Board + Ryzen 7Peiswerte Board + Ryzen 7

Advantage AMD: you get new goods and the motherboards are relatively cheap. But in order to be able to keep up at all, you would need good memory and 2x 8 GB DDR4 3200 should be for that. The old Intel can also live quite well with an old four-pack made of 4x 4 GB DDR4 2133. And used X99S motherboards can be used from approx. 100 Euros actually dust off quite cheaply. Even refurbished from the trader (approx. 140 euros). Always assuming you know what you’re getting into. Risk and bling factor against rational reason.

Power supply only new: Seasonic Focus Plus 650W Platinum

For approx. With the Platinum power supply from Seasonic, we do not completely recover the supposedly lost efficiency for 100 Euros, but with a warranty of up to 12 years, it should probably be able to survive the installed hardware several times. With 550 watts we would certainly have been just short, but we are certainly just putting away the few Euro surcharges. The gold version would then come about. another 10 euros cheaper. The Focus Plus is fully modular, which of course is very much in our interest during the open showcase. Here you can of course choose what pleases and brand preference is not our thing anyway.

However, we would not want to get in much cheaper, even if you have sensible technology in this performance class from approx. 60 to 70 euros. However, there is nothing left of it and used power supplies are not something that could really be recommended unopened. Whether premium brand or not, you should definitely save the last thing with the electricity supplier. Especially since this does not always go as smoothly as one might like with the transfer of guarantees to the second or third owner.

AiO water cooling in colorful: Raijintek Orcus 240

Without RGB illumination, nothing really works with a showcase. Representing all the current cooling Christmas trees, we have looked at the new Raijintek Orcus 240, whose pump sits in the middle of the hose. vibrations via Cold-Plate or radiator housing. Bought. Of course, we do not want to hide the fact that we have tested all these things with a healthy scepticism.

Up to approx. 250 watts makes this AiO a good figure, until approx. 200 watts even a very good. However, since the overclocked Core i7-5930K is always significantly lower, we are already looking forward to the acoustic (almost) nothing.

This all-in-one solution with 240 radiator and two iris fans will be available from January for approx. 109 Euros also on the German market; as usual we had everything a little earlier. Raijintek, by the way, avoids any patent trolling around the positioning of the pump and it is in the end like with the left and the right Twix. Both variants work equally well.

Enclosures and peripherals

We use a Raijintek Paean and the Paxx-S extension for the vertical assembly of the graphics card, because you want to be able to look the monster in the eye. We can read on the second page that not everything runs without pitfalls and that our VGA thick ship also demonstrates the earth pulling.

In addition, there is a (or two) cheap 2.5″ SSD(s), but we want to do without mechanical hard drives. You don’t have to give yourself that acoustically anymore, not to mention the pace. We don’t really need much more, because the audio solution on the used motherboard can be heard. Go!

i7 920 stock => i7 920 @ 4x3,6 GHz => Xeon X5670 stock (35€ refurbished auf eBay) => Xeon X5670 @ 6 x 4,2 GHz
HD5870 => HD7870 => RX480 => GTX 1070 Ti (immer jeweils um gut 50€ Aufpreis)
