NVIDIA verlost streng limitierte GeForce RTX 5090 im DOOM: The Dark Ages-Design

While the DOOM fan community is only just enjoying the dark carnage of DOOM: The Dark Ages, NVIDIA has launched its next PR move – this time not in the form of a new GPU generation or driver optimization, but via a thematically adapted GeForce RTX 5090 with a DOOM look. Target group: fans of the series, collectors, influencers – and anyone else who feels addressed by hashtag comments.

Ray tracing, DLSS 4 and the pomp of the Middle Ages

To coincide with the release of the latest installment in the DOOM series, which this time bears the name The Dark Ages and – nomen est omen – uses medieval aesthetics, clubs and circular saws to make its way through hordes of demons, NVIDIA has announced a special prize draw in an X-Post (formerly Twitter). The prize: a GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition, enhanced with a customized DOOM skin – not by engraving or LED panel, of course, but by a simple wrap design. However, the actual information content of this wrap remains limited due to the flat housing shape of the Founders Edition. Anyone expecting the equivalent of elaborate graphics card modifications will be disappointed.

Conditions of participation and exclusions

Participation is – unsurprisingly – as simple as it is algorithm-friendly: Like the relevant NVIDIA post and leave a “#RTXON” in the comments section. The algorithm will do the rest. The only condition is that you must not live in Quebec, parts of Australia or the Middle East – where either gambling laws or simply a lack of interest in transparent participation apply. The promotion runs from May 15, 2025, 6:00 a.m. PST, until May 22, 2025, 5:00 p.m. PST. The winner will then be informed via direct message or email and will have exactly 48 hours to respond. After that, a replacement candidate will probably be contacted. So anyone planning to manipulate the competition with a bot network should also plan a correspondingly quick response strategy.

Relevance of the RTX 5090 for DOOM: The Dark Ages

Technically speaking, the GPU used is the current flagship of the Ada Lovelace successor generation – the RTX 5090. The Founders Edition is priced at just under 1999 US dollars, while the limited-edition wrap is valued at an additional 600 US dollars. This results in a total value of 2599 US dollars – at least according to NVIDIA. This means that the model remains in the lower price segment compared to the currently available, sometimes overpriced custom designs from various board partners, which range from 2700 to over 3000 US dollars. DOOM: The Dark Ages is one of the first titles to deliver native ray tracing implementations without compromising on performance – provided, of course, you are using hardware such as the RTX 5090. The visuals are complemented by DLSS 4 and NVIDIA Reflex, with the latter likely to appeal to competitive gamers in particular – provided they are not playing DOOM primarily for the story.

Classification: Fanservice or recycling of leftovers?

Such theme-based special promotions are now standard at NVIDIA. There were already limited GPU editions for Cyberpunk 2077, Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV. The difference this time: the graphical customization is rather discreet in comparison – which is probably also due to the small area of the reference design. Those who value visible custom aesthetics will probably be looking at water-cooled RGB models from third-party suppliers anyway. For collectors and lovers of digital devotional objects, on the other hand, the campaign is a welcome opportunity to use your own social media account for a few more likes. The RTX 5090 in DOOM guise is less a technological innovation than a targeted marketing measure – albeit with a limited increase in value through exclusivity. If you’re lucky enough to get the algorithm on your side, you’ll get a top-class GPU with questionable aesthetics but respectable gaming performance. Everyone else can at least comment on #RTXON and hope that their comment doesn’t get lost in the noise of the competition crowd.
