Full screen vs. windowed mode
When you start a new game, you should not only look for the best graphics settings, but first of all, in which mode is the game running. Why? Then look here!
The term window (full screen) can be a bit confusing. In some games this is also called frameless window mode or whatever. As you can all see, you should always play in fullscreen, then the latency is also right!
Summary and conclusion
NVIDIA and the game developers have managed to reduce the GPU limit slightly with Reflex & Boost, improving the latency of your system. As I wrote in the Reflex article, it’s the owners of older NVIDIA GPUs who will benefit from this feature. Activating Reflex and Boost has no negative effects, so you can use it without hesitation. However, if you play games where Reflex is not (yet) supported, you are left with IGFL.
Hello to the AMD graphics card owners, the same goes for you! As we have seen, comparable results are achieved. Unfortunately you have to spend a little more time to find the right limitation. Probably the most interesting fact is and remains: that while it’s basically true that the more FPS, the lower the latency, there are exceptions. We could see that at 165 FPS we had latency only about 4 ms worse than at 325 FPS (almost double). Similarly, 165 FPS can have 7 ms better latency than 236 FPS. As a conclusion I can only say, who has e.g. a RTX 3080, can use a higher resolution (1440p or 2160p) with a 144 or 165 Hz monitor with a good conscience. Quasi off into the GPU limit! With Reflex or IGFL you can keep up with 1080p 240 Hz or 360 Hz players in terms of latency! On the subject of windowed mode, all I can say is: play full screen!
Outlook for further articles? This week I urgently need to do the long planned comparison between NVIDIA and AMD. NVIDIA Reflex vs. Radeon Boost! For this I have two well comparable delinquents at my disposal. My thanks to Igor!
That’s all for today..
