After reports of defective GeForce RTX 5090 and the Chinese variant RTX 5090D made the rounds, NVIDIA has now officially confirmed that it is investigating the matter. According to user reports, the problem mainly affects graphics cards that refuse to work after a driver update.
Black screen after driver update
Several owners of the new RTX 5090 models have reported a sudden failure of their graphics cards. After installing the latest NVIDIA driver, the screens remained black while the system no longer recognized the graphics card. Particularly worrying: Even resetting to older driver versions or resetting the BIOS did not help. The affected GPUs appear neither in the device manager nor in the BIOS.
Preliminary speculation about the cause
The exact cause of the problem is still unclear. Initial speculations point to architectural or driver incompatibilities rather than a direct hardware problem. Some users claim to be able to partially isolate the problem using unusual methods, but so far there is no reliable solution that guarantees a permanent fix.
NVIDIA’s terse response
In a statement to PC Gamer, an NVIDIA spokesperson tersely explained:
“We are investigating the reported issues with the RTX 50 series.”
No further details were provided, suggesting that NVIDIA is still in the early stages of analyzing the issue.
Waiting for official solutions
Given the complexity of the problem and the unsuccessful attempts by users to get their GPUs working again, it remains to be seen how quickly NVIDIA will present a solution. For many buyers of the high-priced RTX 5090, this is likely to be an unpleasant start – especially as it is NVIDIA’s current flagship. Until the issue is resolved, users of the affected models should refrain from updating their drivers and keep an eye on NVIDIA’s official channels.
