Summary and conclusion
What did we learn today in terms of DLSS or FSR? Ok, I’ll start with the performance issue in terms of FPS. They both do a good job here. If this was just about the pure FPS crown, then AMD walks away victorious with FSR. Here FSR convinces once again all along the line. At this point, you simply have to acknowledge that without envy. NVIDIA accelerates the RTX 3080 to near 200 FPS with DLSS, which is more than enough for such a game as Marvel’s Avengers. Especially when you can already natively bombard a 144 Hz WQHD monitor with the RTX 3080. FPS isn’t everything, though. The quality should not have to suffer to vomit limit!
If AMD with FSR surprised me with the performance and quality in Necromunda Hired Gun, I’m a bit conflicted this time around. Because as they say, new game, new luck. It was the NVIDIA DLSS star hour! Today DLSS could show what it can do. The subject of wire mesh fencing, it’s quite astonishing. What could previously only be seen in SD was converted to UHD at the touch of a button. At least that’s how it seemed to me! It is also interesting to note that the wire mesh fence remains visible in detail until the final stage of Ultra Performance. Unfortunately FSR can’t keep up with that, because it lacks a better implementation of antialiasing in the game on the one hand and the deep-learning-network like DLSS on the other hand.
On the other hand, we have also seen that DLSS is not infallible or perfect yet. With the Ultra Performance level, the game is no longer fun in 1440p. It streaks, flickers and shimmers – dynamically the killer for an enjoyable gaming experience! AMD doesn’t do quite as bad with FSR, but the bottom line is that it’s not really recommended either. Both were a pain for my eyes and the extremely good IPS panel of the ASUS ROG Swift PG279QM. The monitor had the gamma curve knocked right out of the panel! AMD FSR is slightly faster and usable up to the quality level in 1440p and does a good job of sharpening the image. DLSS is not quite as fast, but visually much better up to the Performance level, especially in terms of detail. Who’s winning this matchup now? That’s right, the consumer – you guys out there. More performance for those who need to wait out the GPU crisis even further!
Don’t worry, the comparison with other graphics cards is yet to come. I’ll get back to you on the quality in 1080p there too! Then you read the forum…
