MSI has released a new BIOS update for its AMD 800 series mainboards. The AGESA 1.2.0.3a Patch A is intended to improve the compatibility of single- (1R) and dual-rank (2R) DDR5 memory modules. The update is currently only available for the B850 mainboards, while X870 and X870E models are to follow shortly. However, Igor has already tested a beta version for his MSI X870E Carbon WiFi, so perhaps he will write something about the BIOS soon.
According to the official MSI release notes, the patch contains the following optimizations:
-
Optimization of single-rank memory compatibility in a 2DPC configuration (two modules per channel).
-
Optimization of dual-rank memory compatibility in a 1DPC configuration (one module per channel).
The update could prove particularly useful for demanding workloads and memory tuning. However, MSI has yet to provide a detailed technical analysis of the specific effects on latencies and speeds.
Classification: Single- and dual-rank memory
Single-rank memory are memory sticks that are only equipped with memory chips on one side. These modules are often optimized for lower latencies and higher frequencies. Dual-rank memory, on the other hand, has memory chips on both sides and usually offers a higher total capacity, but at the expense of higher latency. Depending on the application, the use of 1R or 2R modules can bring advantages.
The configurations in detail:
-
1R in 2DPC: Two single-rank modules per memory channel often lead to higher bandwidth, but can cause stability problems.
-
2R in 1DPC: One dual-rank module per channel offers a good balance between capacity and performance.

Availability of the update
MSI offers the BIOS update under the version number 7E56v1A41 for the B850 series for download on the official support website. Users of X870 and X870E boards will have to wait a little longer, as MSI plans to make the update available for these models shortly.
The update procedure remains as usual: The BIOS can be updated via USB stick using the integrated flashback feature or via MSI Dragon Center. A backup of the current BIOS version is recommended. With AGESA 1.2.0.3a Patch A, MSI is taking a further step towards more stable memory support for the new AMD 800 series. Although no drastic leaps in performance are to be expected, the update could be advantageous for users with special memory requirements.
It remains to be seen whether future BIOS versions will bring additional improvements or broader compatibility for high-speed DDR5 modules.
