HDR performance
As always, the good news comes first, because the MPG321URX can also display HDR. The Samsung QD-OLED panel makes it possible – regardless of whether you use an AMD or NVIDIA graphics card. MSI remains conservative and offers two HDR profiles: True Black 400 and Peak Brightness mode, which can deliver up to 1000 nits. Customers have these two HDR profiles to choose from – and that’s all they really need. Now it’s best to take a look at the measured values and we’ll see you later…

Interim conclusion HDR
The True Black 400 mode is very good in terms of accuracy, it offers good EOTF tracking in all window sizes (APL). This can also be seen in the color accuracy. If this is important to you, you should use this mode. However, if you want to enjoy approx. 1000 nits, you should use the Peak 1000 mode. It is important to note that the accuracy of the colors and the maximum peak brightness is only given for small image areas (1-5 percent), after which the accuracy decreases dramatically the larger the HDR content becomes.
In particular, the required brightness is not delivered by Samsung’s panel dimming. No one has yet been able to explain to me why Samsung intervenes so aggressively in the brightness here. In the picture above you can see the color accuracy at 25 percent APL (Peak 1000 mode), which you can compare to the 10 percent in True Black 400 mode. You can actually see the difference. The main cause is the poor EOTF tracking!
