MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio review – Quiet, fast, colorful, cool and heavy | igorsLAB

I took a closer look at the MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio and found that it is a bit different from the larger map in the board and also in the cooler. This doesn't even have to be a disadvantage in terms of performance and cooling, if you just do it smartly enough. But for that I have the test and colorful enough the map is always...

The fan stop works, but the card triggers the start pulse twice from time to time, which can also be seen beautifully by the curves. If the blower is manually rotated to 100% at the maximum OC, the temperatures drop to approx. 52°C. However, this is more than just slightly audible, because it is simply loud. But nobody does that. The fans are quieter in normal mode than many competitors, despite the good cooling performance.

By the way, MSI, like the Founders Edition, uses the variable fan control with two different profiles for the three fans (1 + 2), so that we have read out the higher speed values.

Even during the stress test, the card with these speeds remains nicely quiet.

Let's look at the measured values again in direct comparison to the Founders Edition as a tabular listing:

MSI RTX 2080
Gaming X Trio
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080
Founders Edition
Fan speeds Open Benchtable Maximum 1380 rpm (Gaming, Peak) 1907 rpm (Gaming, Peak)
Fan speeds Open Benchtable Average 1359 rpm (warmed up) 1887 rpm (warmed up)
Fan Speeds Closed Case Maximum 1528 rpm (Gaming, Peak) 1959 rpm (Gaming, Peak)
Fan Speeds Closed Case Average 1507 rpm (warmed up) 1942 (warmed up)
Noise Emission (Air) Average 37.9 dB(A), Closed Case (Peak) 39.6 dB(A), Closed Case
Noise Emission (Air) Idle Fan stop 31.3 dB(A)
Sound characteristic / hearing impression rushing, light engine noise rather noisy, hardly lower-frequency shares
Coil-feathers/electric noises easily perceptible, only with high FPS numbers and load changes low, only for very high FPS numbers and load changes

Sound Spectrum

The measured 37.9 dB(A) is based on the measured 1507 rpm in the closed housing. We have applied the same gaming load to the open set-up in the measuring room, but the fans are limited to approx. 1500 rpm to be able to adjust this value exactly. The result is below the Level of the Founders Edition, whereby the cooling is even much better with higher power consumption.

The soundscape is present, but pleasantly restrained. You can also perceive and measure light engine noise for noise (see peak on the spectral analysis above). The noise comes from the turbulence of the rotor blades and remains acceptable in spite of everything, if one keeps the almost 280 watts in the back of one's mind, which have to be disposed of here professionally and relatively quietly as waste heat again
