Mountain Makalu 67 Review – The newcomer among the lightweights with a very good sensor

Software

Now to the software, since there was no big company with a lot of experience behind this product, I did not have such high expectations of the software as with some other products. However, I was also positively surprised here. Mountain’s software is called Base Camp, and all connected Mountain products can be viewed here. In addition to the selection of devices, you can find different links on the start screen, such as support, the mountain website, etc.

If you then click on the Makalu 67 you will first come to the profile selection, here you can create, export and import profiles. Up to 5 profiles can be stored on the mouse, where even automatic launch conditions such as starting a specific game or program can be stored.

In the tab on the left side you can now select the illumination, here you can set it in all known ways.

In the next tab the keys can be assigned as desired, of course there are no limits.

The fourth tab leads you to a very intuitive macro manager. Here you can create, record and edit wild macros and then assign them to a key in the previous tab.

But the last tab was the most interesting one for me, because this is about the general mouse settings. First of all you can search here directly for a new firmware for the mouse, you will even be notified if one is available. Then you can of course set the DPI levels in steps of 100 DPI and even delete and add individual levels. Additionally there are settings for the query rate, the windows internal sensitivity, the click speed, click delay, angle snapping and last but not least the lift-off distance.

Overall I am really impressed with the software, it is super easy to use, very intuitive and has all the features I would expect from a good mouse software. Under the settings you can even go directly to the support page if you are looking for instructions or general help. And if the software is not intuitive enough, there is even a section on the website that explains step by step how the software works and how to create a new profile or macro, for example.

Summary

All in all I am very positively surprised by the Mountain Makalu 67. Not only did it appeal to me in terms of looks and handling, but it also convinced me with its very robust construction and all-round good quality. I also really liked the new sensor, especially because of the short lift-off distance. I’ve never been able to feel a real difference between other high-end sensors before, but especially for me as a low-sens player this feature makes a surprisingly big difference.

In conclusion, I can only say that the total package including software and everything else is absolutely right for the price, if not almost too good. It’s easy to see that the people at Mountain have given a lot of thought to the user experience and have tried to make it as good as possible. Too much euphoria? It is certainly allowed to bring in your personal emotions as well as all the facts when it comes to the conclusion. And that’s exactly what this mouse has achieved: a rodent that stands out from the usual mash. That’s something you have to manage first.
