Software
In keeping with the company name, the corresponding control program was aptly named Base Camp. I have had the version 1.0.36 in use here. With 301 Mbyte size on the disk, you occupy less space than other manufacturers need in RAM for their programs. Once you have set your preferences in Base Camp, only a sparse service needs to run in the background to provide the functionality:
And other than that, I really like the software. Visually appealing and yet functional, clearly laid out and also resource-saving. Here’s a quick tour:
However, the program is not quite perfect, there are a few conspicuous features:
- Send logs to manufacturer is enabled by default
- only .exe files can be placed on the display shortcuts
- to transfer own pictures to the small displays takes a while
- Preview image often does not update after uploading the icons
- Accent color for display dial was applied only after several attempts
During my time with the keyboard I had first installed firmware v27.18.13, then v38.21.16 and now most recently v43.22.18. And there was one thing that has always bothered me since the beginning: The keyboard doesn’t remember between reboots in which menu I was last at the Display Dial. All sorts of things can be adjusted, but even if I, for example. only the volume control is activated, I have to select the corresponding submenu again after starting the PC. Here, a corresponding option would be a useful QoL improvement. Also, deactivating unused submenus does not hide them, they are just skipped in the selection circle.
I have also included the Quickstart-Guide here, where everything is explained in more detail:
BaseCamp
Streamers and other recording enthusiasts should be pleased to know that the keyboard offers OBS integration. All you need is the latest version of OBS Studio + OBS Websocket from Github.
For a brief documentation of this feature, check out this article from Mountain. The comparison to the Elgato Stream Deck made at the beginning of the article fits much better, doesn’t it?
Summary and conclusion
In conclusion, all I can say is that I really liked the keyboard, finally some fresh air and new ideas! The total of five displays can of course be seen as an unnecessary gimmick, but it is kind of cool.
Quickly create a few icons with the image editing tool of your choice, load them on the keyboard and with a few tricks (.bat to .exe convert) have entire scripts ready at the touch of a button has something. Of course, this can also be done with other keyboards without image display, here there are only extra style points. Depending on the angle and sitting position, however, the small screens on the numpad are already quite far down and only partially visible.
There aren’t many keyboards in this high price range, but even so, the Mountain Everest clearly stands out. Other offerings of high-end keyboards aren’t much cheaper, but don’t offer displays and hotswap PCB in return. For my part, I think it’s great to be able to move the numpad to the left side, in order to have more space for the mouse and better ergonomics. Whether the offered functions of this premium keyboard are also worth the premium price is something everyone has to decide for themselves.
The test samples are purchased by ourselves or provided by the manufacturers without obligation. There is no influence on the tests and results. An expense allowance is only paid in exceptional cases, but is shown and also has no influence on the test results.
