Matisse Refresh – light and shadow, sidegrade or real gain? versatility test from old against new and all against Intel

Summary

To pick up the headline directly: There is a lot of light, very pleasant, but also some shadows. Let’s start with the light. The Ryzen 9 3900XT actually does everything better than the Ryzen 9 3900X, especially in the partial load range, where the clock rate can be 100 MHz higher. Sometimes even with the same power consumption as before, since the voltages can usually be a tick lower.

Nevertheless, the Ryzen 9 3900XT is no longer a real sidegrade, because the extra cost is hardly worth it. With a RRP of 529 Euro, the Ryzen 9 3900XT is a whopping 120 Euro more expensive than the street price of a Ryzen 9 3900X, which was 409 Euro the night before the launch. This is at least already a bigger soft shadow, if not more. That is over 25% additional cost for on average only 3 to 4% more performance. At these prices it’s just not worth it, especially considering that new AMD CPUs will be coming soon anyway.

Conclusion

Yes, this CPU can definitely be bought, if it weren’t for the high issue price with the Upgrade-XT surcharge. For gamers this CPU is less interesting anyway, here one is directed rather to the creator of Welt, who does not want to encode his videos with NvEnc and who still uses tasks, which were not replaced by graphics cards so far. Then a Ryzen 9 3900X(T) is also worthwhile, whereby the brackets will fall or stand with the respective price.

Sure, for the Ryzen 5 3600XT and Ryzen 7 3800 XT the picture could have been different, since I estimate the increase in performance to be much higher in percentage terms. But I will definitely not allow myself to make such a judgement without a test of my own. If there are still CPUs that are not conditional, I might do a retest. Otherwise we are waiting for Vermeer with bated breath. Because this will then surely be a real update and not just a sidegrade. So one can be curious.
