The EXCERIA PLUS G4 is KIOXIA’s first consumer SSD with a PCIe Gen 5 interface and currently costs around 183 euros. It uses the cheaper Phison PS5031-E31T controller and 218-layer BiCS 8 TLC NAND to achieve transfer rates of up to 10,000 MB/s for read and 8,200 MB/s for write operations (for the 2 TB version) for sequential accesses. The random performance is specified at around 1.3 million IOPS for read accesses and 1.4 million IOPS for write accesses, placing it in the good mid-range of such SSDs. The SSD is offered in M.2-2280 format, with a choice of 1 TB or 2 TB, whereby I will be testing the 2 TB version today.
KIOXIA (formerly Toshiba Memory Corporation) is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of flash memory and produces its own NAND components as well as complete SSDs for OEM customers. The EXCERIA Plus family is primarily aimed at private users, especially gamers and content creators who value high bandwidths and good energy efficiency. According to the manufacturer, the G4 improves energy efficiency by around 80 % compared to the previous generation (G3) during sequential read operations. which I will test. Kioxia offers a five-year warranty and a write endurance of up to 1,200 TBW for the 2 TB version.
The EXCERIA PLUS G4 is primarily aimed at performance-conscious desktop and laptop users. It is particularly suitable for gaming, video editing and other data-intensive applications that require high transfer rates with reasonable energy consumption. According to the manufacturer, the performance-to-cost ratio particularly appeals to users who want PCIe 5.0 speed without having to invest in top-segment products. We will know how well this works after my test.
Scope of delivery and packaging
The packaging of the KIOXIA EXCERIA PLUS G4 PCIe 5.0 SSD follows a functional and restrained design that is geared towards clear product allocation and simple product protection. The outer box is in the typical KIOXIA color scheme, with a combination of black and a blue accent bar that identifies the EXCERIA PLUS product line. The front shows an image of the SSD, the capacity label (here 2 TB), the form factor (M.2 2280) and the maximum advertised sequential read rate of 10,000 MB/s. References to the PCIe 5.0 interface and the NVMe standard round off the presentation.
Inside, KIOXIA relies on a completely cardboard-based insert to hold the SSD in place, which serves as an environmentally friendly alternative to classic plastic blister packs. The SSD itself is also shrink-wrapped in a transparent, antistatic plastic sleeve that protects against direct contact and electrostatic discharge. A separate antistatic film or conductive transport packaging is not used. The cardboard insert locks the module in place precisely and prevents it from slipping during transportation.
In addition to the SSD, the scope of delivery only includes a folded leaflet with warranty and safety information as well as a reference to the manufacturer’s website. A heat sink or thermal accessories are not included. M.2 screws or spacers are also missing, as these usually have to be provided by the motherboard. Seen in this light, the presentation is practical, resource-saving and sufficiently designed for retail. The packaging deliberately dispenses with superfluous additions, reflecting the focus on experienced users who integrate a PCIe 5.0 SSD into an existing system as an upgrade solution.
