I tested the Seasonic Prime Noctua TX-1600 some time ago and found it to be a good power supply. However, I was concerned by the fact that the fan was replaced without making any internal adjustments. Therefore, I decided to test it again and this time perform a full thermal analysis. For this investigation, I used a commercially purchased specimen, not the test sample originally provided by Noctua.
A manufacturer must perform a full thermal analysis if a significant change to a component could affect the cooling of a power supply or other IT components. Thermal sensors are carefully attached to all critical components without affecting the internal airflow. The power supply is then pushed to its performance limit to determine whether and to what extent the change affects reliability and operation – especially compared to the original configuration. This is exactly what is being investigated today with the Seasonic Prime Noctua TX-1600 and the regular TX-1600 version.
According to Noctua, this power supply is around 8-10 dBA quieter than the standard version in the speed range from 17 to 100%. This indicates a less aggressive fan control. In addition to the fan modification, Noctua has also changed the top cover. Inside, however, there are no differences – both power supplies use identical heat sinks. And now? I’ll just do what Noctua should have done. Or Sesonic, or even better both.
