On December 1, 2024, Pat Gelsinger has left his position as CEO of Intel with immediate effect. The company announced that Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner and senior executive Michelle Johnston Holthaus will serve as interim co-CEOs while the board searches for a new CEO. Gelsinger’s departure comes amid significant challenges for Intel. In August 2024, the company announced plans to cut around 15,000 jobs, or about 15 percent of its workforce, to realize $10 billion in savings by 2025. These measures were taken in response to a loss of 1.6 billion US dollars in the second quarter of 2024.
Under Gelsinger’s leadership, Intel sought to strengthen its position in the semiconductor market, particularly by expanding contract manufacturing for other chip developers. Despite these efforts, the company faced production delays and increasing competition, particularly in the field of AI technologies, where rivals such as Nvidia and AMD were gaining significant market share. Another ambitious project under Gelsinger’s leadership was the planned construction of a mega-factory in Magdeburg, Germany, with investments of around 30 billion euros. However, this project was put on hold due to financial challenges and strict cost-cutting measures.
The announcement of Gelsinger’s resignation led to a rise in Intel shares of almost 3 percent in pre-market trading. Analysts and industry observers will be following the company’s next steps closely, particularly the search for a new CEO and the implementation of the planned restructuring measures. Pat Gelsinger, who returned to Intel as CEO in February 2021, had previously worked at the company for 30 years and played a key role in the development of the i486 processor. His departure marks the end of an era and presents Intel with the challenge of regaining a foothold in a rapidly changing technology market.
